Looking Ahead to NE/SAE 2023-2024

Earlier this month I attended a meeting of the Association Societies Alliance (ASA), a professional association for those of us who lead professional associations (we call ourselves SAEs). Our organization has thirty-one members from all over the US and New Zealand.

It was an interesting meeting, not just because I was able to learn with other Association Society executives and introduce myself to industry colleagues. It also highlighted for me just how many programs NE/SAE can offer our members through the ASA alliance.

As you read this month's newsletter you'll notice two new workshops offered through ASA and CalSAE. As NE/SAE members, you receive registration for these terrific programs at a discount. Our partnership with ASA members also allows NE/SAE members to take advantage of hundreds of webinars every year -- all of which qualify for CAE credit.

NE/SAE doesn't just take advantage of these services, though. We are also sharing webinars led by NE/SAE members to the rest of the network. In fact, the highest attended webinar in 2022 was led by NE/SAE member Dawn Tedesco!

I am so honored to be able to represent association and hospitality professionals in New England. With guidance from an amazing group of leaders on the Education Committee, you can look forward to many options to get together with your compatriots and learn from the best in the business.

For more information about upcoming activities visit the NE/SAE events website.

New Study on Member Experience

A new study of more than 1,000 members of associations revealed that members are still struggling to find the value in their membership dues.

The survey was conducted by Forj, a member experience platform provider launched in 2020. This is the third time they conducted this survey, and results show members are somewhat satisfied with the value they receive from their membership, but unsure if their associations can continue to meet their needs.

The data for this year's survey showed a decline in member satisfaction compared to last year's responses. When the results were broken down by career stage, they show early career members are less likely to renew, even though their satisfaction with services is higher than their counterparts.

As expected, connecting with others and participating in training and education rank high with members. Interestingly, mid-career respondents were most likely to say they stay in their association primarily to share their knowledge and expertise. The data indicates that many associations have the right skills and experience to provide the education members are seeking.

Tomorrow's Workforce Coalition Working to Expand the Use of 529 Savings Plans

moneybag_graphic.jpg

Nearly 600 organizations have now joined the Tomorrow's Workforce Coalition. The Coalition supports the bipartisan, bicameral Freedom to Invest in Tomorrow’s Workforce Act (S. 722 / H.R. 1477), sponsored by Senators Amy Klobuchar (D-MN) and Mike Braun (R-IN), and Congressmen Rob Wittman (R-VA) and Abigail Spanberger (D-VA).

Under current law, 529 plan beneficiaries cannot use funds to obtain or maintain recognized postsecondary credentials, including professional certifications, licenses and other valuable training or credentials.

The Act would allow individuals to use these savings plans to offset with costs associated with credential program tuition, testing fees, continuing education and credential renewal; and other expenses required to obtain and maintain a credential.

NE/SAE and the Association Societies Alliance Are Launching a Facilitation Workshop

Good facilitation skills help all parties in negotiations, building ideas and having effective discussions. Improving these skills is what this educational series, “Strengthen Your Facilitation Skills: Enhancing Your Impact as an Association Professional” aims to help you do. Facilitation skills can elevate quiet voices, seek new beneficial outcomes, or harness creativity that leads to better results.

Honing and applying focused facilitator skills will help you do all these things and more. This series will introduce you to the role and techniques of effective facilitation while arming you with opportunities to practice and hone these facilitation skills – including probing, bridging, synthesizing and reflective listening. What’s more is you’ll receive feedback on how you can improve.

Over the course of the three-session series, participants will:

  • Gain an understanding of how to map out a facilitation process that helps a group work through common needs, such as brainstorming, problem-solving and consensus-building
  • Create follow-up assignments in between sessions that expose you to opportunities to practice your facilitation skills and techniques in real-life settings, and
  • Share your experiences with peers to develop a richer learning experience

This program earns 1.5 CAE hours per session, for a total of 4.5 hours for the full program.
