NCSSM-Morganton Update
Site Location       Educational Program       Resources & Media       Get Involved
Greetings!
I am very excited to report continuing momentum and positive energy surrounding the NCSSM-Morganton planning process. Critical milestones were achieved during the past month, and we have concluded the advance planning phase of our project.

This included approval of our land transfer request by the State Board of Education to convey approximately 60 acres of land from the North Carolina School for the Deaf to NCSSM. In late-September, a diverse cross-section of stakeholders joined us in Morganton to attend the public unveiling of the educational program plan and master site plan. [The video of the CoMMA presentation can be accessed here and on the NCSSM-Morganton website .] The following day, the NCSSM Board of Trustees held their quarterly meeting at the Morganton Community House at which time they formally reviewed and unanimously approved two major recommendations - the educational program vision plan and the master site plan - that will serve as a blueprint for building out the new campus.

Details related to the next phase of the project will be shared in our November newsletter. We also look forward to sharing the next episode of our video documentary series in next month's newsletter. We are continuing to invest in this storytelling format given the tremendous response to the pilot episode that was created by Caleb Owolabi (NCSSM alumnus '11) and produced and edited by the team at Telescope. Our next episode will highlight the new community our institution will call home.

Please continue to be in touch with recommendations and referrals to help us develop champions and investors for this project. Finally, please don't hesitate to call on me whenever I can be of service to your efforts in promoting and advancing public education and contributing to the momentum occurring throughout western North Carolina.

Best wishes,

Kevin Baxter

NCSSM-Morganton Approved Planning Process Documents
The educational program vision and site recommendation were presented to the NCSSM Board of Trustees in September 2017 and each was unanimously approved at that meeting. The materials, as presented, are available below:

As part of the NCSSM-Morganton public unveiling event on Thursday, September 28, 2017, the audience was invited to submit questions to the presentation team. Many of the questions were addressed but the program concluded with several unanswered due to time constraints.

In an effort to respond to these unanswered questions, we will feature several in each of our upcoming newsletters. Additionally, we welcome new questions from any interested reader. Please find the first several questions to be featured in the space below:

Q: Is there sufficient housing in the area for facility and staff and if not is there a plan to address?

A: A housing summit was held on August 30 by Burke Development, Inc. with local city and county officials, realtors, builders and other vested interests present. Lengthy discussion occurred to include breakout group sessions, and plans will continue to evolve such that sufficient housing inventory exists for those relocating to the region over the next several years. This remains a priority of the NCSSM-Morganton planning office, the regional governments, and partners in the public and private sector.

Q: Do you envision students being accepted to one campus and remaining at that same campus through graduation? Or would you envision students bouncing between campuses for various reasons perhaps that haven't even arisen yet?

A: Consistent with current practice, applicants will be invited to apply to NCSSM and to identify his or her specific preferences as it pertains to their ranked choices among all NCSSM programs (Durham, Morganton, Online, Summer Ventures). Students will only be considered for admission if they have included a specific program among their ranked choices. With regard to the second question, the planning process has not yet explored this level of detail as it pertains to the student experience. The opportunity for students to transition among programs during their experience will be something that is actively investigated during a later stage of the planning process and may extend to an analysis of mini-term experiences, summer mentorship experiences, and hybrid exchange programs.

Please continue to submit any questions you may have for the NCSSM-Morganton Mail Bag to Kelly Lookadoo at kelly.lookadoo@ncssm.edu.
