Cleveland Grotto 2024 Science Grant

The Cleveland Grotto (NSS 005) will make available a total of up to $1500 in science grants for cave-related projects. The Grotto will make grants of various amounts to bona fide research projects by members of NSS-affiliate grottos or to projects under the aegis of a college or university. Grants are not geographically limited.

The funds are available from the Cleveland Grotto Science Fund which was endowed by Bob (NSS-26333L) & Bev Danielson. The money is available to support research in geology, streams and water, biota, karst and other cave-related research projects.

Requests for equipment grants will be awarded mainly to institutions (schools, grottos). If an individual capital grant for equipment is made, and no supporting institution is available to maintain the equipment after the project is completed, the equipment will become the property of the Cleveland Grotto.

Applicants will be expected to have their project output published in an official publication, preferably the Journal of Cave and Karst Studies, NSS News, an academic journal or other similar publication(s). For all activities to be undertaken, if there is any question regarding legality or access, the necessary permissions must be sought from all appropriate and potentially involved parties (landowners, government organizations, etc.) Fund monies are not permitted to be used for travel or in any way that is illegal, unethical, or objectionably dangerous. Awarding of grants and the amounts of each grant will be made at the discretion of the Cleveland Grotto Board whose decisions are final.

The application is available at https://clevelandgrotto.org/science-fund/

Deadline for submission for the 2024 grants is Dec. 31, 2023. Awards are expected to be announced by February 2024.

For questions or clarification contact Rich Kline, Science Fund Chair, at rkliner@gmail.com. The completed application and documentation can be sent to rkliner@gmail.com or to:

Recruitment for Karstology Doctoral Program

2023 National Cave and Karst Management Symposium

Hello NCKRI Partners!

We are contacting you on behalf of the National Speleological Society and Southeastern Cave Conservancy (SCCi), the host of this year's biennial National Cave and Karst Management Symposium (NCKMS). It is being hosted in Chattanooga from November 6-10, 2023.

We are seeking scientists, students, management professionals, and anyone else who has a focus on caves and karst to submit presentations and papers for the symposium. Details are included in the attached document. Abstracts are requested by September 15th, but an extension may be arranged if asked for. The theme this year is "From Ridges to Streams", but any topics related to the management of caves and karst resources is acceptable.

Details and criteria for abstract submittal can be found HERE. Additional information on NCKMS 2023 is available on our website nckms2023.org, including registration details, scholarship info, and a schedule of the week's events.

Full and partial scholarships are available for attendees. The NCKMS Scholarship Committee manages the George N Huppert Scholarship Program. The application deadline is September 20. More information and application information is located HERE.

New Mexico Geological Society's 73rd Fall Field Conference

The 73rd NMGS Fall Field Conference will be held on October 4-7, 2023 in Carlsbad, New Mexico. The conference will focus broadly on the regional geology and hydrology of middle Permian rocks exposed in the Guadalupe Mountains and Northwest Shelf of the Delaware Basin, and more specifically on manifestations of evaporite karst phenomena that have profoundly influenced the topography of the lower Pecos region.

Cave Research Foundation Annual Meeting

The National Cave and Karst Research Institute is the venue for this year’s annual meeting. The location is 400-1 Cascades Ave, Carlsbad, New Mexico. This is beside the Pecos River and a few blocks from the main road through town. NCKRI acts as a nexus for cave and karst science, stewardship and public education.

The Board of Directors meeting on Friday, November 3rd, from 8 AM until 5 PM, and public presentations, posters and maps about cave exploration, science and other topics will be in same location on Saturday, November 4th, from 8 AM until 4 PM. A more detailed agenda will be forthcoming. We invite all interested presenters, for talks, posters, about your work, be in in New Mexico, CRF, or not. Contact John (below) with your ideas. We hope to have presentations from the three federal cave management organizations in New Mexico. This meeting will allow cross-fertilization of projects, networking between the regional attendees and those coming from out of state from CRF regions around the country.

Eddy County is the most cave populated county in the state, with many classic limestone caves of all sizes and conditions. Caving field trips and volunteer work are being planned for the week before and possibly on Sunday after the meeting. Meals and accommodations are varied and will be addressed shortly.

Special Issue for International Journal of Speleology: Request for Submissions

Dear colleagues,

As you surely know, Alexander Klimchouk passed away last May.

He was a great cave explorer, scientist, and friend of many of us.

He was the main driver of hypogene speleogenesis over the past twenty years, and his presence and the tough discussions with him regarding cave origin and evolution will be greatly missed.

We would like to dedicate a full special issue on Hypogene Karst (his most recent research field) to be published in the International Journal of Speleology (UIS) in 2024. Alexander, from up there, will surely love this idea! The Special issue will be guest-edited by Philippe Audra, Jo De Waele, and Arthur Palmer.

Submissions are open from now until February 28th 2024.

When submitting choose "Klimchouk Special Issue" among the type of submissions. Submissions are open access and with no article processing charges, as always. We would like to close the special issue on the first anniversary from his passing away. We hope you can contribute with an article on hypogene karst.

If you intend to send in an article, please send us a provisional title and author list: jo.dewaele@unibo.it

Thanks

Arthur, Jo, and Philippe

NMT: Introduction to Cave Geology (GEOL 289)

Classes might have only started a couple of weeks ago but NMT students are already getting a deeper understanding of cave environments. Professor Daniel Jones took his students (photo below) to several caves in the Gila National Forest. In this class, students learn geological concepts through the lens of caves.

Restoration of Valles Caldera's Sulfur Springs

In August NCKRI's Academic Director, Dr. Daniel Jones was part of a team to discuss possible rehabilitation and restoration of the Sulfur Springs area at Valles Caldera National Preserve. Professor Jones was joined by other New Mexico Tech and National Park staff to assess the site which was acquired in 2020 but was mined very heavily in the early 1900s. Earlier this year, several Scientist in the Park (SIP) interns joined NCKRI in investigating this impacted area.
