4th Thursday NCJW Movie Club
Thursday, August 26, 7:00 pm, Zoom
NCJW movie night is the 4th Thursday of the month at 7:00. All movies can be viewed on either Netflix or Amazon. Watch the movie on your own, then come and share your thoughts!

Our August 26 movie is Promising Young Woman. This playfully provocative and ingenious rape-revenge satire is about a society that thinks what a shame it would be if the career of a promising young man were ruined over some alleged incident in which both parties were probably drunk.

Pushing 30 and defined by a hideous crime involving her best friend, emotionally scarred medical school dropout Cassie Thomas (played by Carey Mulligan) knows firsthand that some wounds never heal. Leading an uneventful existence, still living with her parents, waiting tables at a cheap coffee shop to earn a living, Cassie has found the perfect way to deal with the painful past.
None of the important work of NCJW – GLB & WOC is possible without your support. If you are able, please consider a donation in support of this no-charge event.

Thursday, September 23, 7:00 pm, Zoom
NCJW movie night is the 4th Thursday of the month at 7:00. All movies can be viewed on either Netflix or Amazon. Watch the movie on your own, then come and share your thoughts!

Our Sept. 23 movie is The Cakemaker. Drool-worthy confections express unspoken emotions in The Cakemaker, the first feature
from the writer and director Ofir Raul Graizer and a master class in exquisite restraint. Beginning as one thing and ending as quite another, this softly lighted melodrama follows a reserved
German pastry chef with a cozy cafe in Berlin and a handsome Israeli lover, and then life changes suddenly.

A Special Film Series from Our Partner:
Orange County Jewish Coalition for Refugees
Film: August 16 - 26, Streaming
Panel: August 24, 4:00 pm, Zoom
OCJCR is excited to launch our Film Series beginning this week. Each film has been carefully selected to highlight an aspect of the refugee crisis and the plight of asylum seekers from a different perspective, and represents a different country or population. Every Film Series event will be accompanied by a panel presentation with the film producer, asylum seekers featured in the film, and/or other experts in immigration policy.

The first film, Midnight Traveller, will stream from August 16-26. Midnight Traveller is a gripping vérité story made by a family on the run. Hassan and his wife Fatima are both filmmakers who are educating their daughters and encouraging them to be artists. The whole family shot this autobiographical film, which began when they sought and were rejected for refugee protection, and follows them along the notorious Balkan smuggling route. As they experienced increasingly degrading circumstances, the family latched on to filmmaking as a way to not just survive, but retain their humanity. Watch the trailer here. Midnight Traveler is the first in an OCJCR Film and Panel Series that will continue through May 2022.

Follow-Up Panel Discussion

Also, please join us on Zoom on August 24 at 4:00 pm for an up-to-the-minute update on the situation on the ground in Afghanistan as the US military is pulling out and emergency evacuations are underway for some 17,000 Afghan allies and their families. Our panelists are Air Force veteran Phil Caruso, board member of No One Left Behind, and Ismail Khan, an Afghan SIV recipient who serves as a No One Left Behind Ambassador.

Register here for access to Midnight Traveller and the Zoom panel.

For Goodness Cakes!
Spread Love, Joy, and Frosting!
Wouldn't it be fun to bake a birthday cake for a foster child?

For Goodness Cakes gives underprivileged youth in the foster care system the chance to have a birthday by matching volunteers to bake special cakes just for them. Its mission is to give individual youth one special moment that is about them, helping to nurture optimism and confidence at a critical age. A wonderful and meaningful opportunity for our Section to get involved.

How it works: For Goodness Cakes receives requests from nonprofits that work with at-risk youth for cake orders. After you complete an online orientation and quiz, you become part of the Sprinkle Squad, which lets you to pick a cake-making assignment according to YOUR schedule. To learn more, visit www.forgoodnesscakes.org/volunteer. Once you have joined the Sprinkle Squad, please contact Bobbi Horowitz at (657) 235-2511 or email info@ncjwlongbeach.org.
