Skin Cancer Prevention Tips

According to the American Cancer Society, melanoma is one of the most common cancers in young people. As a result, it is imperative to take the needed precautions to protect your skin from this preventable disease.

Precautions include limiting exposure to ultraviolet rays by seeking shade and lathering on SPF 30+ sunscreen. It is recommended to wear clothing and a hat that cover or shade the skin, as well as sunglasses. Moreover, avoid tanning beds and sunlamps. Lastly, be sure to protect children from harmful rays too.

As a reminder, sunscreen SPF 15 and above is Health Care FSA eligible. If diagnosed with melanoma, you may be eligible for benefits under the Cancer and Critical Illness Plans.

Pedal Through National Bike Month Safely

Cycling can be a great way to make exercising fun and enjoy the outdoors. Be sure to stay safe when riding with these helpful tips from the National Safety Council:

  • Check your equipment
  • Make yourself visible
  • Wear a helmet
  • Follow the rules of the road

Following these tips is an excellent preventive measure, but sometimes accidents happen. In the event of an injury, members of NCFlex's Accident Plan may be able to receive a payout to help cover out-of-pocket costs. The Accident Plan can even help cover lost income due to lost time at work, home healthcare costs and everyday expenses like utilities and groceries. Those with the plan can learn how to file a claim and be ready for whatever life brings.

Making Changes to Your Dependent Day Care FSA

If your dependent day care needs change, you may be eligible to adjust your Dependent Day Care Flexible Spending Account (DDCFSA) contributions.

Some situations that may qualify:

  • Child care/adult day care stops
  • Child care/adult day care starts (summer camp, a parent returning to work post-parental leave)
  • Child care/adult day care costs change (child starts kindergarten and before and/or after-school care is less than full-time day care)
  • Your spouse stops working

This life event is intended to allow changes to the DDCFSA as life happens, to avoid over or under-contributing into the plan. You have 30 days from the date of an event to make changes to your account. The annual maximum still remains $5,000 per household. You must be enrolled in a DDCFSA currently to make changes or will otherwise need to wait until open enrollment to opt to contribute to a DDCFSA.

To make changes non-university employees can log into the Benefits Enrollment Platform* or contact Benefitfocus at 1-855-859-0966. University employees should contact their University Benefits Rep to request the change through NCFlex.

Documentation is required for life events. For a day care change, provide written proof from the dependent's day care provider stating the change in cost or enrollment status or complete the NCFlex DDCFSA Qualifying Life Event Form.

To learn more about the plan and how to file a claim, visit our FSA Documents page. Email ncflex@nc.gov with any questions.

*When visiting the Benefits Enrollment page, click the button for your enrollment system. If your employer is not listed, select the "eBenefits" button or contact your HR representative for assistance.
