Field trip to Yusen Terminals LLC.
|
|
On November 30, 2017, I took my students to Yusen Terminals LLC.
One of our goals at Santa Monica College is to provide real life working experiences to our students in the Global Trade and Logistics industries. Our program offers classes in areas such as: Supply Chain Management, Operations Management, Principles of Logistics, International Management, Transportation Management and Procurement. You can find more information in a flyer attached to this article. We like to take students on field trips so that they can learn about job opportunities in international trade and logistics. Since the Ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach are the nation's two largest ports, and are so important in our economy, I took them on a tour of one terminal.
Yusen Terminals LLC. YTI is a company jointly owned by Nippon Yusen Kabushiki Kaisha and Macquarie Infrastructure Partners III, operates marine cargo terminals in Los Angeles and Oakland. YTI provides stevedore and terminal services to container shipping lines.
It was great experience to take students to tour this facility. Our main contacts were Tammy Duncan Manager, Client Services and Tracy Burdine, Director Operations. Students were able to see big vessels, containers, trucks and various operations while learning about the different positions at YTI. We also saw crane operators, customer service representatives, operations managers.
Students were able to ask questions and talk to employees of the company.

|
|
DEC 5, 2017
Keith Everett
(GTL Business Instructor) along with
Katya Rodriquez
(GTL Business Instructor), and
Sal Veas
(Chair of the Business Department) led Business students on a tour at LAX/United Airlines.
25 students took part in this GTL field trip to see the real world of logistics at the second busiest airport in the USA.
The tour was guided by United Airlines operations managers who educated the students on bag sortation processes, airplane maintenance, scheduling of flights, and intricacies of the air cargo hangar processes and procedures.
The students and SMC GTL faculty were given a private tour of a 787 Dreamliner, which was the highlight of the tour.
SMC will continue their relationship with LAX/ United Airlines to give our students exposure to logistics and supply chain and advance our students to internships and employment.

|
|
In this TEDx talk, entrepreneur and father Mike Marinoff gives his daughter the talk of a lifetime...while reminding us all of the one thing needed to move forward in life.
Mike Marinoff, and Co-Owner of Network Kinection Erick Briggs
, care about helping dedicated students and employers, (with internships and jobs that have the potential to lead to successful careers), find each other.

PRO-GTL Interviews Network Kinection
|
|
January 11, 2018
The
Network Kinection
team are
experts in job development, job placement and work-based learning in the community college system.
In this interview,
Mike Marinoff
and
Erick Briggs
discuss how their
work impacts students, faculty and employers.
Network Kinection shares job trends they are seeing in the Global Trade and Logistics space; and ways that students can increase their opportunities to secure internships and entry level jobs in their field of study, (while they are still in school).
How can we each be a part of helping community college students move forward in a positive direction, and build a solid foundation for a successful career?
We can all help in two ways:
- Think of your connections. If you have a connection at a business that would be interested in partnering with Network Kinection and Pro-GTL, so that our community college students can be a top choice for their internships and entry level jobs, let us know.
- If you know a student who "is "passionate about building a career" in the Global Trade and Logistics sector, or another area, please connect that student with the Network Kinection team.
We want to help students gain relevant experience within their field; so that by the time they graduate, they are already on the path to building a successful career.

"
As we build up our pipeline of businesses and students...it is our hope that our work sets students for life," Erick Briggs.
