IDEA BOARD
Use the activities provided in the NCHS Curriculum
to energize your Club activities!
Activity #1

Contact NAMI
(209) 558-4555
Activity #2
An activity to help students learn to identify when someone is being stigmatized, and what to do to help.
Activity #3
Harmful words are the driving force behind stigma. This activity encourages Club members to develop a poster campaign that begins an effort in educating fellow students about the harmful effects of "stigma words".
Like NAMI on Campus, the BC2M activities empower students to educate each other, make better communities and create a safe and supportive culture on campus. The BC2M Activity Guide can be used to enhance your NAMI on Campus activities with resources and lesson plans that focus the club members on their goal of ending stigma.

Many people with mental illness say that the stigma that surrounds mental illness is harder to live with than the disease itself. Check out this collection of activities and conversation starters addressing the stigma of mental illness and the resulting reluctance to seek help. Students will examine ways of overcoming stigma and promoting a realistic understanding of mental illness.

Stigma is not just a matter of
using the wrong word or action.
Stigma is about disrespect.
Review this infographic with your Club, and challenge them to develop their own "National Day Without Stigma" campaign.

Howie Mandel takes a brave, honest look at his personal struggle with OCD. This video can be a springboard into conversations and questions for club discussion:
  1. Howie Mandel initially regretted speaking about his mental illness. Why do some people avoid talking about it?
  2. Are certain types of people less likely to talk about mental illness? Old or young, male or female?

great ice-breaker video your Club can use to get the conversation started about stigma. The video asks about why it is this way and what we can all do to give each other the support we need to get help.

The Trevor Project recognized Lil Nas X for talking about suicide & mental health. The award recognizes when someone uses their platform to help normalize conversations about mental health and suicide prevention among LGBTQ young people. Read more→

Join NAMI’s campaign to end stigma and create hope
for those affected by mental illness
Let others know that there is hope and understanding. You can change the way the world sees mental health. Stigma harms the 1 in 5 youth affected by mental health conditions. It shames them into silence and prevents them from seeking help. Encourage Club members to take the StigmaFree Quiz to see how they might be affected. Take The Pledge to be #stigmafree!

Club officers... use this NAMI StigmaFree presentation at your October Club Meeting to introduce the topic of Stigma and how the words people use reinforce negative stereotypes.

Directing Change $1,500 Mini Grant
The Directing Change Program engages students to learn about suicide prevention, mental health and other critical health and social justice topics by creating short films and art projects that are used to support awareness, education, and advocacy efforts across the state, in their communities, and on their campuses.
The mini grant funding is intended to help schools bring the program to a classroom and implement a youth-led awareness event.
