NAMI Virtual Town Hall Presents:

Grants Pass v. Johnson: Impact of SCOTUS Decision and Where We Go From Here
Wednesday, September 18th
4:00 – 5:30 PM ET

Join NAMI Virtual Town Hall and our panelists in discussing the U.S. Supreme Court ruling in City of Grants Pass v. Johnson. When the Supreme Court of the United States (SCOTUS) issued its decision in June, it upheld a city ordinance that allows communities to criminalize homelessness.

This decision has already had a nationwide impact on local communities – and it will have lasting implications for people with mental illness, already overrepresented in our criminal justice system. About 1 in 5 people experiencing homelessness have a serious mental health condition, meaning they will be disproportionately impacted by this ruling.

During this virtual town hall, attendees will hear from panelists about:
The policy and legal implications of the Grants Pass v. Johnson case
What communities are doing to ensure people receive housing, not handcuffs
Resources and opportunities to take action
Ways to get involved in their community

Reserve your spot today to stay informed about the evolving conversation around homelessness and how we can best support our unhoused neighbors.

We welcome your participation and invite you to submit questions for our guest experts through the webinar registration form.

SEPTEMBER: Suicide Awareness & Prevention Month

If you know someone who is at immediate risk of suicide, call 911 right away. It can be difficult when someone you know expresses thoughts about suicide, but you can show support by doing the following:

  • Talk. Your willingness to express your concern for the person in crisis can be the first step in getting that person help.

  • Listen. Being an active listener is another way of reminding a person in crisis that they are not alone.

  • Remain Present. Your physical and emotional presence in the person’s life makes a difference. If you are worried about their safety, get help from a mental health professional immediately.

  • Call or text 988. Last year, 988 was activated as a new three-digit dialing code. When someone dials 988, they will be connected to the existing National Suicide Prevention Lifeline. This confidential support line is available 24 hours a day to provide free help to people in suicidal crisis or mental health-related distress.

CITY COUNCIL MEETINGS

City Council meetings cover an array of topics within local Government. With so many ongoing changes we want to make sure NAMI's voice is heard. Its time to stand up and raise our collective voices to help you and your families. When policies and programs are being decided we want to advocate for Mental Health Services, Housing and so much more. Please take the
time to see when your local city may meet and what is on the agenda. If any topics arise we want to make sure we are advocating for ourselves, families and the community at large who may not be able to articulate their needs. Some local City links below.

Fore more information if you want to assist in advocating email

July 16 marks two years since the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline became available nationwide. Even before then, government officials, crisis professionals, and advocates across the country were coordinating and building mental health crisis systems to be ready for this new opportunity. With over 10 million contacts now answered by the 988 Lifeline, and volume expected to keep rising, the work isn’t done!
