Somali Centre Faces Uncertainty Amidst Local Opposition in Etobicoke

Plans for a Somali community centre in Buttonwood Park, Etobicoke, face opposition from residents and politicians concerned about using parkland for the project. The Somali Centre for Culture and Recreation (SCCR) received support in April to explore viable sites but faced backlash over the Buttonwood Park location. Premier Doug Ford and local councillor Stephen Holyday advocate for alternative locations. City staff recommended the Buttonwood Park site in June, but due to community pushback, the executive council deferred the decision to October for further consultation.

Surrey's Black Community Wants Voice in Policing Transition

Surrey's Black community is calling for inclusion in the city's policing transition to address systemic racism and discrimination. The Black, African, Caribbean (BAC) Advisory Committee has criticized the lack of engagement with Black residents, emphasizing that the issue is not about choosing between RCMP or Surrey Police but about reforming the underlying system. The BAC urges the city and province to involve them in discussions and decisions, reflecting their experience and needs. With the transition underway, they seek meaningful dialogue and investment in community programs to support equity and address social issues.

Charitable Sector Braces for Change Amid Conservative Poll Lead

The charitable sector is anticipating significant shifts with potential changes in Ottawa, as Pierre Poilievre's Conservatives lead polls over Justin Trudeau's Liberals. While anxiety pervades, experts urge a balanced perspective, noting past conservative governments have supported sector initiatives, like Harper’s maternal health funding and Flaherty’s disability savings plan. Despite concerns about potential policy rollbacks, sector leaders emphasize the importance of continued advocacy and alignment with government entities. They caution against drastic rebranding efforts to align with political trends, highlighting that sector work often thrives beyond political tides. Engaging constructively with government and focusing on core missions remains crucial as the sector navigates these uncertainties.

Reports Reveal Rwanda and Ethiopia Face Regulatory Gaps in Philanthropy

According to two reports published by the East Africa Philanthropy Network analyzing each country’s philanthropic landscape, huge gaps persist in holding back the development of Rwandan and Ethiopian philanthropy. In Rwanda, the absence of a standardized definition for philanthropy and public benefit organizations, as well as a lack of understanding of concepts like impact investing, hinder development. In Ethiopia, legal frameworks for charities and nonprofits are incoherent, making resource access challenging, particularly for grassroots initiatives. Key recommendations include enhancing accountability in Ethiopia and increasing public awareness and technology use in Rwanda.

‘No safe space in society’: new UN report reveals the extent of systemic racism faced by people of African descent in Australia

A special UN working group tabled its first-ever report on the experiences of people of African descent in Australia to the United Nations Human Rights Council in Geneva.

The report documents what people of African descent living in Australia already know: Australia has a racism problem.

In fact, the UN’s Working Group of Experts on People of African Descent said in a press release at the end of their visit that people of African descent in Australia are living “under siege of racism”.

The new report says people of African descent experience racism in many key areas of life, including health, education and employment. It also highlighted the use of racialised hate speech in political rhetoric, racial profiling in law enforcement, and the highly racialised nature of Australia’s immigration policies.
