Unlock the Potential of the Month:
Summer is finally here! It is time for FFA Camp and other program activities! What are the summer essentials you should invest in? We’ve come up with a list of 10 Summer Essentials that all Ag Teachers need to survive the summer festivities:
-
Durable Backpack- Backpacks for camp and livestock shows must be durable, comfortable, and able to hold all the essentials. Try designating a work backpack and a summer backpack to make them both last longer. Use this bag to pack all of the items we recommend.
-
Sunscreen and Bug Spray- There are so many songs that talk about sun tans, tan lines, and summer nights. However, what those songs don’t mention is how it feels to be a mosquito buffet and victim to forgotten sunscreen. Keep those items in your backpack to prevent burns and bumps.
-
Portable Fan- Don’t let those summer livestock shows and camp make you look like you’ve showered in sweat. Invest in a portable fan to keep you cool when things start to heat up.
-
Snacks- HANGRY is not a good look in the summer heat. Pack yourself some snacks, pack some extra for your students too. Show concession stand lines can be long and the drive home from an event even longer. Pack snacks to keep yourself satisfied until your next meal. Who knows, you may even make a new friend sharing a snack.
-
Water bottle- STAY HYDRATED. Water is essential for helping everyone survive summer. A water bottle ensures that you will stay hydrated and will always have an option to have something to drink. Plus, buying drinks everywhere you travel can turn into big money.
-
Mattress Topper For Camp Bunk Beds- A night on camp bunk beds or cots remind us that we are no longer spring chickens. Make the investment in the mattress topper. It is definitely a game changer.
-
Good Tennis Shoes- Ag Teachers WALK a ton in the summer and then some. Invest in comfortable shoes to get you through. If Forest Gump wouldn’t use them neither should you. Your feet will thank you later.
-
Comfortable Clothing- Invest in breezy, comfortable, and semiprofessional clothing. As agriculture teachers we are always ruining our clothing. What other profession can go from the welding shop, animal dissections, the greenhouse, and then to an alumni meeting all in the same day? Invest in clothing articles that are comfortable, easy to pack, and versatile.
-
Portable Charger- The outlets in the camp cabin may be few and far between. Maybe the livestock show is taking longer than expected, or your flight to a conference has been delayed. Grab a battery-operated charger to ensure that you are able to communicate and navigate during the summer heat.
-
Travel bag of Necessities-Keep a travel size bag of medications, band-aids, sanitizer, and other materials that you think you may need when out and about. The motto “It’s better to have it and not need than need it and not have it” applies in this case. Keep this bag in that durable backpack so that you never leave without it.
Combination to Happiness:
Give yourself a time out. No, you’re not in trouble. You’ve made it through the year. Despite all of the challenges, you’ve persisted through conventions, conferences, contests, paperwork, meetings, grading, educational changes, and more. Even the best coaches know when it’s time to sit their players out. Give yourself a time out for an hour, days, or weeks. Detox from emails, social media, and the constant need to be doing something. Spend some time with yourself in silence. How can you find ways to keep your peace? Are you making sleep a priority? Have you scheduled that doctor’s appointment that you needed to schedule but have been putting off because you are so busy? It is time to take off the teacher hat and exist as you for a little while. Being an agriculture is not entirely who we are, it is a part of us. Make sure to take care of the rest of you too.
