As many of you know by now, we have experienced the profound loss of a remarkable leader in our branch, community, county, and beyond—the passing of our beloved president, Michelle Leete. There’s a profound ache as we come to terms with the sudden departure of our incredible leader, leaving behind an indescribable void in our NAACP Fairfax County family.
Michelle wasn't just our president; she was the heartbeat of our cause, a fierce advocate for civil rights, and a motivating force in our community. Her dedication to justice and equality was not just a role she played; it was her lifelong calling.
For those of us fortunate enough to have worked alongside her, President Leete was more than a leader—she was a friend, a mentor, a determined advocate, and a source of unwavering support for the Fairfax County NAACP branch. From her early days a decade ago as Treasurer to her term as President for 2023-2024, she led with grace, passion, and a genuine commitment to improving our community. As we navigate this profound loss, we find solace in knowing that the torch of leadership, once carried by our fearless leader Michelle Leete, is passed on to capable hands. With a mix of sadness and hope, we announce Niki Zimmerman as the new president of the NAACP Fairfax County branch.
The NAACP bylaws for units such as ours are clear on the transfer of
authority. “In the case of resignation, removal, or death of the President, the Vice President(s) shall automatically ascend to the position of president according to their numerical rank, for the remainder of the term of presidency.” As our elected 1st Vice President, Niki now assumes the role of President for the remainder of 2024.
In the face of this challenging season, Niki steps into the role with courage and determination, ready to uphold the values and principles that have been the foundation of our community. We ask you to join us in welcoming Niki as she takes on this significant responsibility during a time that demands resilience and unity.
Niki comes to this position with her unique strengths and perspectives, and we believe her leadership will inspire and guide us all. She joined the branch in 2016 and has previously served as Armed Services and Veterans Affairs Chair and Economic Development Chair before assuming the role of First Vice President in 2023. She has also served in our Virginia State Conference as Chair of the Criminal Justice Committee and as Area Director of Region 3, Northern Virginia. As we remember and honor Michelle's legacy, let us also extend our support and encouragement to Niki as she leads us forward.
In the days ahead, we will come together to mourn the loss of our beloved president and celebrate the beginning of a new chapter under President Zimmerman's leadership. Your continued support is invaluable, and we appreciate your warm welcome for her as she steps into this role during such a trying season.
In the midst of our grief, our thoughts are with Michelle's family, loved ones, and everyone who had the privilege of knowing her. We're working to arrange gatherings that reflect the spirit of the remarkable woman we've lost, events that capture the essence of her tireless efforts for justice and community empowerment.
While Michelle may not be physically with us, her spirit lives on in the countless lives she touched. She leaves behind a legacy of passion, determination, and a relentless pursuit of justice. We'll carry forward her vision in our hearts and actions, ensuring that the flame she lit continues to light the path toward a better, more just world for all.
