Mythic Moms

What's a Mother, really? In concept it is a matrix from which individualized new life can spring - the earth, the sea, the skies, mountains, etc. Since life springs from all sorts of things - sub-atomic particles, individual cells, the singularity before the Big Bang - we also find matter itself named Mother. Black Madonnas such as the one at Chartres Cathedral are worshiped in many mythologies. Sci-fi and speculative fiction might find parallels between the still missing Dark Matter and the elusive Dark Mother.

In some creation myths females appear first and new humans result from self-fertilization. Sci-fi stories tell about all-female planets - often discovered by pleasantly surprised males. The Amazons are a version of this concept. The physiological basis for this type of story is that all human embryos are female up to about six weeks, when the Y chromosome kicks into gear to form males. Perhaps the virgin births of many mythologies refer back to this fact, told by ancient scientists in stories that would last the aeons.

Some myths tell of humans springing from stones, fire, sweat, wind, and in Persian stories the Waqwaq tree that bears human beings as fruit. Scientists have now turned skin cells into sperm cells  - which does make you wonder about some of those creation stories with magical births.

Science continued to shed light on mythology. Microchimerism explains how a human or puppy in the womb leaves behind some of its genetic material in the mom. That can then be passed on to subsequent children/pups, as evidenced in the Rh factor syndrome. Think how this might apply in stories about shape shifting as well as the importance of virgins and the first-born child in some cultures.

Some women just aren't cut out to be moms. Though they wreak  havoc in real life, they do make for dramatic stories. In Greek myth Medea was a gorgeous sorceress who seduced Prince Jason (without too much difficulty) into taking her away and making her his queen. All went well between the passionate lovers, they had two young sons, and then for political reasons Jason had to marry a much younger local princess. Infuriated, Medea pretended to go along but then treacherously killed the girl. Then to spite the faithless Jason she killed her own little boys.

Versions of this tragedy keep repeating in real life as mothers kill their children. In Greater Tuna Texas's high school play Medea kills her children because, "She did not want them to be raised by a Yankee stepmother". The prevalence of wicked stepmonsters in fairy tales hints that this is a too familiar real-life problem.

Who are your favourite reality, myth, or media moms - wonderful, wicked, or indifferent?

MYTH NOTES

One of the Global Challenges identified by the Millennium Project is the Status of Women .

Our Mythic Challenges program helps you use Mythic Themes, Archetypes, and Symbols to "Create Stories that Change the World".

Some issues your own stories could address -- the link between a woman's education and the number of children she bares, connections between drugs and post-partum depression, property rights in patriarchies versus matriarchies, etc.

The Entertainment Industries Council at www.eiconline.org offers guidance to accurately portray some of these issues.

Along those lines, check out the various groups of Mothers Making an Impact.

See "Familial Love" in our new book SHOW ME THE LOVE!

In Inner Drives explore the Aspirational Solar Plexus for good moms, and for the bad ones, the Lower Solar Plexus, Sacral, and Root Centers.

The Emerging Female Hero

June 14 & 15  Houston TX

Designed for the screenwriter, novelist, romance writer, mystery writer, children's book writer of any gender, and for those who want to actualize their inner female hero.

Women's roles keep changing in real life but media portrayals have not kept up. The swing from restricted femininity to women's rights to kick-boxing heroines has been one of leaps and bounds - but has not always been accurate.

Media reflects reality and helps us understand our lives. It creates perspectives that enrich our lives and has the potential to inspire a more multi-dimensional identity.

TALENT POOL
Bruce Logan
Bruce Logan is an Emmy-winning Director, Cinematographer, Visual Effects Director, Writer, Producer, and more.

His career began as a teenager working on Stanley Kubrick's classic 2001: A Space Odyssey. He's worked on million dollar commercials, low budget documentaries, and feature films. One of my favourites -- he blew up Darth Vader's Death Star in the original Star Wars film.

Bruce is a co-founder of Hollywood Master Seminars and you can see more about his work in this video.

Bruce will be speaking at the Great American PitchFest June 20-21, including team-teaching with Pamela Jaye on "Writing for the Shoot" and will be on the Industry Roundtable.

He'll also be available for private consultations at GAPF.

In my interview with him Bruce shares insights from his years as a professional in all areas of the Hollywood media industry. He talks about how technology has, or has not, changed how we tell stories.

New Fiction from Pamela Jaye
PAY THE PIPER, DANCER

Hollywood is a hard place to be a failure.

Perhaps even harder is to live with your own success.

Plagued by the down-side of her theatrical accomplishments, famous director Felice has decided to drown her sorrows... and herself. Billy, a homeless young man from Santa Monica Boulevard's gay cruising market is looking to score. He breaks into a luxurious Hollywood Hills house where Felice floats face down in the swimming pool.

Hoping to find a quiet place to hang out alone or something to steal for drugs, Billy instead finds himself rescuing Felice. Angry that he foiled her plans for oblivion, she digs into his brief but troubled history. The initially combative situation evolves into a tenuous intimacy as the fragile gates of regret are battered down to reveal the sins and losses that haunt them both.

Trusting a stranger is often easier than trusting those who know you. Family, fame, drugs, love, disappointment, disillusionment... through the course of the evening, Felice and Billy challenge each other to face the truth about themselves, to connect again with their dreams,

and to redeem their personal worth.

But can they move forward from this brief redemption?
