I believe that role models and mentors are incredibly important in our lives. In an age when we sometimes work to minimize every hero and disregard the human element in our lives, I think it’s vital to remember that we can learn many lessons from our fellow human beings. Throughout my life I have looked up to several role models, and I’ve had so many amazing mentors I’m afraid to list any of them for fear of leaving someone out! We recently teamed up with our fellow Smithsonian Affiliates to host a day honoring the late Sally Ride. Visitors to AMSE got to take part in a wonderful set of activities designed to honor Sally and show her example to all of us, and to inspire a curiosity about the cosmos. Sally was the first American woman in space, serving as an astronaut on the Space Shuttle Challenger that went into space in 1983. She had earlier gotten her BA, BS, MS, and PhD at Stanford University – the BA in English Literature and the other degrees in Physics. Four degrees! She was a talented tennis player who went pro for a while, and she was in the first group of women to be trained by NASA as astronauts.
AMSE and K-25 History Center Director:
Alan Lowe
| After a second trip into space in 1984, Sally worked for NASA, taking part, for example, in the panels that investigated the Challenger and Columbia tragedies. She then went on to a distinguished career of teaching the next generation of scientists, engineers, and astronauts at the University of California, San Diego. She passed away in 2012. What an impactful, meaningful, paradigm-shifting career and life she had. As we work with kids at AMSEF, and especially with young girls, Sally and other trailblazers show that the sky is not the limit! | |

Bus Tours continue to roll out this season as we welcome guests from across the country! We are in need of some volunteers who are interested in serving as a Bus Guide Assistant. These volunteers are responsible for keeping up with the tour schedule, keeping the group together, assisting with tour surveys, and helping guests with questions. This is a great way to get involved and learn from the lead bus guides!
Tours are provided on Monday, Thursday, and Friday of each week. We ask that guides come in at 8:30am on tour days - the bus will leave by 9am and return no later than 12:30pm.
| |
If you are interested in becoming a guide assistant, please reach out to Tony at tschnadelbach@amse.org.

The STEM of History (SOH) is a podcast produced by the American Museum of Science and Energy Foundation (AMSEF) in Oak Ridge, Tennessee with funding support from Humanities Tennessee and the National Endowment for the Humanities. This series examines the intersection of science with history. It focuses on tracing how scientific inquiry is interpreted in the historical record, and in turn, the impact of historical analysis to informing scientific inquiry.
This fascinating glimpse into how Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) has been present throughout history shows no great feat has ever been accomplished without the aid of these four key elements. Listen to an amazing list of guests and contributors in original interviews “talk shop” about how the world goes round and attempts to improve itself with every spin.
The STEM of HISTORY has been developed with a generous grant from Humanities Tennessee and the National Endowment for the Humanities. https://amse.org/stem-of-history/
