Hearing on April 3
Helping Families in Mental Health Crisis Act

Dear Representative   ;

Thank you for serving on the Health Subcommittee.

The testimony that you will hear on Thursday is very important to me.  H.R. 3717 is the fix to this nation's
problem in delivering mental health services.

When a person in a family is diagnosed with a mental illness, it is not an individual's illness.  It becomes a family illness.  I have years of experience in this field and know it to be so.

The hearing for such will take place Thursday, April 3, 2014 at 10:30 a.m. in 2322 Rayburn House Office Building.  Thank you for attending.

Why it is important to me?
It gives the individual and his family a better quality of life, something I have seen and more who are denied of services, the opportunity to realize recovery is possible.

I have read the results of the findings performed by the Subcommittee on Oversight and Investigations.  It is spot on.

The fixes in Representative Tim Murphy's Bill HR3717 will work and need to be implemented posthaste.

It has a high rate of return on the investment made.

I ask your committee to pass HR3717.

Thank you.

Randy

Who am I and why do I care?
I am an author, advocate and activist in promoting the recovery of mental illness, with the inclusion of family members as part of the treatment team.

I am a member of the 10th generation of the Mott family living with a mental illness.. Promoting a better quality of life, empowering people with a mental health illness and affirming my goal, recovery is possible.

HR 3717 makes my goals possible.

I am retired after a 32 year career in computer software development.  I am the person who wrote the oil and gas software used by the US Department of Energy, administered from the field office in Casper, Wyoming.  I dedicated the rest of my life in helping others as those are people who will help me.

I took the classes required to be a peer specialist and served as a peer worker for a Community Mental Health Center, seeing firsthand the results of the subcommittee's finding.

As an Alumni of AmeriCorps, working for the VISTA project, I was assigned to NAMI, National Alliance on Mental Illness, Kansas as a field organizer, creating independent support groups in the cities and towns of Central Kansas.  Today I live in the state of Oklahoma, which has the second largest population of people living with a mental illness.
Seven Hundred thousand (700,000) live with a mental illness where only 80,000 are in treatment.

I volunteer my time to NAMI Oklahoma - Edmond North-OKC affiliate, teaching the free NAMI class of Family to Family, NAMI smarts - teaching people to advocate in legislative issues and interacting with consumers.
