MY PILATES JOURNEY
by Senior Pilates Teacher
I was diagnosed with juvenile Rheumatoid Arthritis at 16 years old and it came on like a freight train. One day my knuckles were hot and hurting, and within 2 weeks I was unable to walk. After jumping into western medicine for the next 5 years, taking medication that masked symptoms, yet was unable to help with the actual disease, I had an unexpected uptick with my health and began my search for alternative healing. I have not been on pharmaceuticals since.
Since I was in good health for the next few years with no flare ups in sight, I just danced and bicycled my days away while eating mostly whole foods with a sprinkling of acupuncture. Then I became pregnant and spent my whole pregnancy in pain using a cane to move about. This was my longest flare, continuing into my son's preschool years. Luckily for me Blue's teacher had a second job as a Pilates Instructor and told me daily: try Pilates!
Within 3 months I was out of flare and knew I had to become a Pilates instructor. The beauty of the Pilates method for me is that it meets me exactly where I am at, at any given time. I have extreme joint sensitivities due to the arthritis that make it imperative for me to have precise form. Pain is a good teacher with lots of feedback. If I am in slight flare I can keep up with my practice and modify. If I am in big time flare I can still keep up with my practice, it just looks incredibly modified, but I am still able to flood my body with consciousness and care. If I am out of flare I can star in my own slow motion gymnastics routine harkening back to yesteryear when I was a junior elite gymnast.
The method is so vast and variable with so many layered insights as you journey through it, that even for this distracted citizen of the world, it will keep my attention for decades. I have been able to use it as a tool for myself in multiple ways: to walk again; as an emotional fortifier; as a triumphant energizer; and as good company in sometimes solitude. In sharing the method as a teacher I have been able to coax grace, strength, emotional and physical flexibility, confidence and enthusiasm out of a variety of students. Interestingly, while the method is about the uniform development of the body through a series of exercises, it also becomes a therapeutic expression of emotions and experiences. Kind of feels like the new hairdresser or bartender role of accidental therapist. Yay for unregulated therapy: freedom for psychological adventurers in a time of much regulation!
I owe much to the method and the man Joseph Pilates. I have also had many teachers who have inspired me along the way to hear my own truths while following a prescribed method. It is interesting to me that within such structure we can become free or experience freedom. A sound physical body allows us to not only pursue our dreams but to have a fit house in which to dream. Imagining the landscape of our futures is in tandem with the strength and fortitude to march forth and carve out that future...with the added bonus of a robust community of movers and seekers.

YOGA & THE FEMALE PELVIS: A WORKSHOP FOR WOMEN
Your Teacher: Leslie Howard
Date: Saturday
, March 12,
1-5:30pm
Cost: $90
Proper strength and stabilization of the pelvic floor helps to create the correct foundation for each movement of the body. This is the true meaning of "core work." Whether you experience any of the following conditions, or are just plain curious about this region of the body, this workshop is for you:
- pelvic pain
- lower back, hip or groin problems
- discomfort during sex or while using tampons
- skin irritation
- leaking when laughing or sneezing
- having to go the bathroom too often
- prolapsed organs
- pregnancy and birth
In this workshop we will locate, assess, soften, stretch, strengthen and exercise the muscle groups of the pelvic floor, discuss mula bandha, abdominal health and how to utilize the pelvic floor in asana.
The workshop will begin with anatomy, lecture and discussion, followed by subtle experiential movements to awaken your understanding of this often ignored area. A series of specific exercises and asanas for the pelvic floor will follow. Handouts will be provided.
Bring your friends, sisters, mothers and daughters. Although helpful, no yoga experience is required. This workshop qualifies for continuing education credits with Yoga Alliance.

SUBTLE AND VITAL: BALANCE THE SACROILIAC JOINT
Your Teacher: Alissa Gibbins BenPorat
Date: Saturday
, March 19,
1-3pm
Cost: $40
The Sacroiliac (SI) joint is the crossroads of the body, wedged between pelvic halves at the base of the spine; it plays a subtle yet vital role in our daily life. When it moves in a balanced and harmonious way, we feel comfortable, strong and supported.
When the SI's bone rhythms get thrown off-kilter, whether it be from past injuries,
a life of sitting, hyper flexibility, imbalanced gait patterns or emotional holding, it can send our bodies and minds into a painful spiral. No matter the cause, the SI joint yearns for release,
balance, and strength so we can move in a healthful, confident way.
Inspired by Alissa's own healing journey and ongoing practice of working with SI instability, this workshop is designed to give you simple tools to continue at home. In this 2 hour workshop, we will cover basic anatomy, and use small props to release and balance the SI. Then we will learn to safely mobilize the low back, pelvis and hips in a grounding Pilates-based flow.
ALL WORKSHOPS ARE NON REFUNDABLE AND NON TRANSFERABLE.

Wondering what to expect from the FYATT?
Lead-assistant Michelle Cordero recently shared her journey as a student:
"My teaching changed for the better at the Advanced Training, and not because I learned to teach and do advanced poses. I learned to recognize what triggered my fight/flight/freeze mode and how to work with it rather than against it.
I learned that the person everyone wanted to show up and teach was ME...not the perfect version of me that lives in my head."

Recent 5-Star Review from Barb P:
"Innerstellar goes from strength to strength. I am very time constrained and practicing with Kiki never fails to be an extraordinarily wise use of my precious yoga hours. And each visit to practice with her strengthens my belief that she is truly compassionate and creative and authentic. Definitely make this place a stop on your yoga journey. From the moment you step through the door, you are transported out of city life. It starts from the top and Kiki leads by example. Yes, you will see her teaching and you will see her moving around the pilates equipment as well. Whatever level of practitioner you are, if you want to work with a top teacher, make sure you check out her classes and her studio."
