Home repair providers share updates

At a recent Muskegon County Senior Activities Committee meeting, home repair providers shared updates of projects completed with funding from the Muskegon County Senior Millage. Home repair projects must average $7,000 or less; some homeowners contribute funds toward the cost of repairs. In addition to the three agencies sharing photos, the City of Muskegon Heights also receives funding for home repairs. Many of the programs have wait lists.

BEFORE a replacement floor was installed to remove tripping hazards for a Muskegon County homeowner. This flooring had worn through after many years of furniture in the spot.

The City of Muskegon has served well over 100 people since 2019, but has 81 on a wait list.

AFTER the floor was replaced by the City of Muskegon, through their county-wide home repair program.

Other repairs have included a woman in a mobile home who needed 2 new doors; she slept on the couch due to fear of fire and only having one door. Now she is able to sleep in her bedroom.

Trinity Village Nonprofit Housing Corp. helped a homeowner who had mold remediated, but did not have the funds to repair their only bathroom.

When the work was complete, the county resident had a working bathroom, thanks in part to the senior millage.

Community enCompass serves the City of Muskegon through their home repair funding. Repairs, such as this roof, are prioritized for safety; they also try to find alternate resources when possible.

Ceilings such as this one are other safety issues. Homeowners are pre-screened, must meet income requirements and have had no home repair assistance in the last two years, according to Community enCompass.
