Notes for Sunday's Music

The great Johann Sebastian Bach (1685-1750) is without question one of the most influential composers of all time. He synthesized musical forms of both northern and southern Germany, as well as assimilating other national styles such as Italian and French, into his own summary of musical practices at the time while pointing to the future.

The early Bach biographer Phillip Spitta (1841-1894) pointed out that his Prelude in A Minor features "certain characteristics reminiscent of the Buxtehude School" with its opening right hand running solo, intermittent counterpoint, and tonic pedal point to give rising tension. The alternation between free writing (intended to sound improvised) and strict counterpoint also points to Buxtehude's influence.

The matching Fugue, played for the closing voluntary, is among his most celebrated and divinely inspired works, characterized by a jaunty and driving rhythm. Each of the four voices of the Fugue is carefully crafted to sing as though each were a voice in a choir. The Fugue's subject (main theme) paraphrases a sequence from a Vivaldi concerto for two violins.

Choir Reunion Weekend Sept 20-22
We're looking forward to our reunion weekend when singers past and present join together for a time of festivity.  Primarily envisioned as a "homecoming" to celebrate our new "Miller and Wrigley Organ" (Goulding & Wood, Opus 50), this is shaping up to be a weekend of joining our present singers with those who sang decades ago in Good Shepherd.  The weekend will include a gathering of adults on Friday evening, a combined choirs rehearsal Saturday morning, activities for all ages Saturday afternoon, and then singing the Sunday services culminating in evensong at 5:00pm.  We have had excellent response so far, but would like to hear from all choir alumni.  If you haven't done so, please give John Linker at ring on 859 335 6166.  See you in September!
