Notes for Sunday's Music

Dieterich Buxtehude stands as the champion of North German baroque organ works which featured free and chorale based works as models for J.S. Bach. The Praeludia feature improvisatory sections alternating with imitative or fugal sections. The various divisions of the organ allow echo effects, colorful full sonorities, bold pedal points, and scalar toccata-like figurations.

Percy Whitlock has only recently gained respect as a British organ composer. His career included study under Stanford and Vaughan Williams, while later serving as organist at Rochester Cathedral and 13 years as municipal organist in Bournemouth, UK.   This Fanfare shows his imaginative tonal and melodic language for the organ, employing the colorful and stately pageantry of British ceremony, reminiscent of Elgar. The middle section of this ABA' form allows for tranquil melodic beauty to contrast with the Tuba and Festival Trumpet fanfares in the A sections.

The motet Justorum animae by Charles Villiers Stanford is a dramatic setting of text from the Book of Wisdom. Echoing the Gospel Lesson as well as the Psalm, we are reminded that the righteous who have gone before us are at peace in the hand of God. The piece is in three short sections. The outer two reflect the contemplative nature of the first and last part of the text, while the middle section is a vivid depiction of malice - "Et non tanget illos tormentum malitiae."

Sunday Afternoon Concert Program Notes

J.S. Bach culminated and perfected various styles of the chorale prelude, one of which was the trio, featuring two treble voices supported by pedal for the bass line. Each phrase of the chorale appears within the texture in long note values. This chorale based on "All Glory be to God on High" is found in his German Organ Mass, Clavierubung III of 1739.

Leo Sowerby, the most highly regarded American organ composer of the early 20th century, served as organist/choirmaster at St. James Episcopal Cathedral, Chicago from 1927 -62, and later started the College of Church Musicians at the National Cathedral, Washington, DC. Symphony in Major (1930)is a three-movement organ symphony, following in the tradition of Franck and Widor and others. His pallet of specific organ colors reflect his fondness for the E.M. Skinner organs of his time. Fast and sinister is composed in a 5/4 meter, and combines two of the three themes with early traces of rock rhythms and even a fragment of an Easter chant tune, Christ ist erstanden.

Healey Willian is most remembered for his service music in the Hymnal 1940. As organist of St. Mary Magdalene, Toronto, he composed numerous volumes of organ and chorale music in the Anglican tradition. SLANE is best known for the text "Be Thou My Vision" in the Hymnal 1982, #488.

Former Good Shepherd Organist/Choirmaster Bob Burton
directs the Reunion Choir
A Happy Choir Reunion Last Weekend

Last weekend many former and current singers enjoyed getting together for a time of visiting and singing.

The weekend commenced with a gathering party where many singers enjoyed an informal evening of catching up.

On Saturday we had a full day of rehearsals, beginning with evensong rehearsal in the morning.
The Choir prepares for procession prior to Evensong on Sunday
Following a nice long lunch break, the choir re-convened for a rehearsal to prepare for Sunday morning's music.

Highlights of each of the rehearsals included former organist Bob Burton's witty antics and Owen Sammons's refined conducting style.

The organists had a LOT of notes to play, and most noteworthy was Brian Hunt's accompaniment of the canticles, which was the raucous "Dyson in D."

Saturday evening the entire group enjoyed a party hosted by Reba Roberts and Mark Burton.  Thank you Reba and Mark for your gracious hospitality!
Thank you to chorister parents Mary Campbell, Susan Wright,
Laura Whittaker, and so many others who contributed to the smooth operations of the entire Choir Reunion Weekend.
The weekend culminated in the Reunion Choir singing the 9:00 and 11:15 Eucharists on Sunday morning, then joining together one last time for Evensong at 5:00pm.  At all services the sounds were simply heavenly.

Did you enjoy the elegant reception following Evensong on Sunday?  That was the wonderful work of chorister parents and many other behind-the-scenes people for whom we owe a fantastic debt of gratitude.

Huge thanks to all who pulled together to make this a most memorable Choir Reunion Weekend.  There were many acclamations of "let's do this again," so in about five year's time, we suspect to be ready to do this again!

A year of fun and service ahead!

Good Shepherd Organ on the cover of The Diapason

The September 2013 issue of The Diapason, a monthly journal devoted to church music, has a wonderful feature about our organ as a noteworthy recent installation here in the United States.  The article describes the concept for this organ in great detail, as well as insights into the world of organ building and matching instrument to the space.  Contributors to the article were Jason Overall (President of Goulding & Wood), John Linker (Organist/Choirmaster), Joe Jones (Chair of the Organ Committee), and Fr. Brian Cole (Rector).
