Notes for Sunday's Music

This Sunday we welcome not only our usual pool of singers, but alumni of the choir program who have returned to join together in a "choir reunion weekend." Indeed the weekend will be blessed with much reminiscing of stories, laughs, and of course, a lot of singing together.

The sprightly anthem by Sidney Campbell (1919-1973), Praise to God in the highest, is in a sense a hymn-anthem in that a modified version of the same tune is heard for all three stanzas of text. As a work prominently featuring the soprano voices, great playfulness and text painting occurs at the words "Give us laughter." Sidney Campbell held many prominent organist positions in England, including Ely, Southwark, and Canterbury Cathedrals.

Charles-Marie Widor (1844-1937) was an astoundingly prolific French composer of the late 19th/early 20th century. Taking the lead from Csar Franck, his predecessor at the Paris Conservatory, Widor composed ten symphonies for organ of varying lengths and difficulty. Organ recitals prior to services continue to be a major part of the Parisian music scene, and music such as his symphonies is often played prior to services in Ste Sulpice, the church where Widor served as "provisional organist" for 64 years. In Praeludium circulare Widor experiments with extreme chromaticism and a roundabout way of establishing a tonal center by first playing all of the notes around the given pitch. Finale is a joyful dance which also exploits a high level of chromaticism and gives much to do for the organist's feet.

Former Good Shepherd Organist/Choirmaster
Bob Burton has come from Akron, Ohio for the special occasion
Bob Burton, Brian Hunt, John Linker, and Owen Sammons to present concert Sunday afternoon in Good Shepherd

As part of our Choir Reunion weekend, organists past and present are uniting to play a wonderful and diverse program prior to Evensong this Sunday 22 September.

In all, four organists are scheduled to share the bench on Sunday afternoon.  Long time former organist/choirmaster Bob Burton will be kicking off the recital with Antonio Soler's Concerto No. 3 for two organs.  Bob will play the primo part on the Miller and Wrigley organ with John Linker playing the secundo part on the three-stop Steiner organ that was regularly played during the organ construction project. Bob will also play the enchanting fourth movement from Messiaen's Mass of Pentecost, which contains interesting imitation of bird calls, lucious strings depicting the love of God, and the organ registrations imitating the sounds of rippling water.
null
Former Assistant Organist Brian Hunt will perform in the recital and accompany the Canticles
at Evensong.
Brian Hunt was Assistant Organist at Good Shepherd in the 1980s and for the past decade has been organist of Christ the King Roman Catholic Cathedral in Lexington, which now houses an exciting new organ built by Randall Dyer.  Brian will play the lovely and lyrical Aria by Louiville composer Matthew Dickerson.  This short masterpiece diplays the tender solo sounds of the Miller and Wrigley organ.

Present Organist/Choirmaster of Good Shepherd John Linker will conclude the program with the Finale from Symphony No. 2 by Charles-Marie Widor, a merry piece that sometimes reminds the listener of angels dancing.

Improvisor extraordinaire Owen Sammons will then conclude the program with an improvisation on themes to be heard throughout Evensong.  Serving as organist for our choir's recent tour through Italy and France, Owen's playing received critical acclaim both as accompanist and improviser. Owen is Director of Arts and Music at St. Peter's Episcopal Church in Paris, KY.

Good Shepherd Organ on the cover of The Diapason

The September 2013 issue of The Diapason, a monthly journal devoted to church music, has a wonderful feature about our organ as a noteworthy recent installation here in the United States.  The article describes the concept for this organ in great detail, as well as insights into the world of organ building and matching instrument to the space.  Contributors to the article were Jason Overall (President of Goulding & Wood), John Linker (Organist/Choirmaster), Joe Jones (Chair of the Organ Committee), and Fr. Brian Cole (Rector).
