Organist Eugene Lavery to Perform this Sunday in Good Shepherd
Eugene Lavery

This Sunday we welcome organist Eugene Lavery to play the 4:15pm recital.

New Zealand born organist Eugene Lavery is an exciting and versatile musician, highly sought after as a keyboard artist, conductor and teacher. Recent and upcoming engagements include solo recitals at The Cathedral of St. John the Divine, New York, NY; Harvard University, Cambridge, MA; Holy Cross Cathedral, Lagos, Nigeria; and St. Paul's Cathedral, London, United Kingdom.

As Organist and Director of Music at historic Calvary Episcopal Church in Louisville, Kentucky, Lavery directs the semi-professional adult choir and oversees the annual Sacred Arts series which offers a diverse range of liturgical and concert performances. Mr. Lavery previously served as Artistic Director of the award-winning Cathedral Choir School of Delaware; one of the most prominent Episcopal chorister programs in the United States.

Lavery received his Bachelor of Music with First Class Honors from the University of Auckland while also serving as Organ Scholar and then Assistant Organist at Holy Trinity Cathedral in Auckland, New Zealand. In 2007 Mr. Lavery relocated to New York after gaining entry to the prestigious Master of Music program at The Juilliard School under the tutelage of Paul Jacobs.

Pursuing a multi-faceted career, Lavery has appeared as an organist for live broadcasts for Television New Zealand and Radio New Zealand; recorded a solo CD 'Joie' on the Harrison & Harrison organ of Holy Trinity Cathedral in Auckland; served as conductor and organist for Royal School of Church Music courses in the United States, New Zealand, and Nigeria; and performed with the American Symphony Orchestra and Auckland Philharmonic Orchestra.

Notes for Sunday's Music

The music of Sigfrid Karg-Elert (1877-1933) is becoming increasingly well known, though he's not yet a standard household name in this country. If an organ composer wants to be recognized in Germany, he writes music based on chorales (i.e., German hymns). Such was the case of Karg-Elert when he composed his 66 Chorale Variations, Op. 65, of which two are played for the voluntaries this morning. He was influenced by the music of Bach (no surprise there; every composer is influenced by Bach!), Claude Debussy, and Max Reger. Both Schmcke dich, o liebe Seele and Ich dank dir, lieber Herre represent these influences. Schmcke dich (based on Hymn 339) is a luscious, chromatic treatment of this Eucharistic tune. Ich dank dir, lieber Herre (based on a tune not found in our Hymnal) features numerous echo passages wherein the player changes manuals rapidly every few beats for dramatic effect. Fragments of the tune are heard in the soprano voice, but in a disguised manner. Flourishes and chromaticism abounds, though within the strict parameters of tonality, hallmark traits for this romantic / impressionistic / expressionistic composer.

The Anthem for Evensong, Samuel Sebastian Wesley's Blessed be the God and Father, was written for a service on Easter Day at Hereford Cathedral, when 'only Trebles and a single Bass voice' were available, the bass singer being the Dean's butler. The central portion of the work, a dialogue between a treble soloist and the treble chorus, is flanked by passages for tenors and basses alone. The final fughetta on the words 'But the word of the Lord endureth forever' is heralded by a dramatic dominant seventh chord of E flat on full organ. Wesley (1810-1876) held positions at Hereford, Exeter, Winchester and Gloucester Cathedrals, as well as Leeds Parish Church.

First Evensong of the year this Sunday

Please join us as the choir sings our first Evensong service of the year this Sunday at 5:00pm.

Evensong is considered to be among the most valuable crown jewels of the Episcopal Church. This service is sung daily by most cathedrals and collegiate churches, countless composers have written music for the texts of evensong. The service originated in Archbishop Thomas Cranmer's first Book of Common Prayer in 1549. Cranmer compiled the canonical offices of Compline and Vespers to become the principal evening service of the Anglican Church. The service was slightly modified in the 1662 Book of Common Prayer, which is the customary source of Evensong texts to this day. The recitation of the Psalter is one of the key components of Evensong, as well as the Magnificat (Song of Mary), Nunc dimittis (Song of Simeon), and a series of prayers chanted between Officiant and Choir. This service will feature festive music, including Wesley, Blessed be the God and Father, Stanford Evening Service in B-flat, and Linker Responses. Please come and bring your friends and neighbors!

Child care available from 4-6pm on Sunday 9/14.
