Notes for Sunday's Music

French composer Jean Langlais (1907-1991), by his life and testament, united two traditions in France in the twentieth century. As organist at St Clotilde in Paris for more than forty years, he strengthened the spiritual musical legacy established there by Csar Franck and continued by Charles Tournemire. As a blind man, he was his generation's foremost successor to the great blind virtuosos Louis Vierne and Andr Marchal.

His Neuf pieces, composed 1942/43, was in response to World War II, which was ravaging France at the time. Chant de paix is a simple song of peace. Langlais's Huit pieces modales, composed in 1956, is a collection of eight short pieces in eight different modes. Mode de sol (Mode of G) is a lively work in Mixolydian mode. The scale of this mode is very similar to the major scale (Ionian mode), but the seventh scale degree is lowered one semitone, giving the music a more ancient, chant-like atmosphere.
