Notes for Sunday's Music

Franz Tunder (1614-1667), who died 18 years before the birth of J.S. Bach, is thought to have studied with Girolamo Frescobaldi in Rome before becoming organist at the Marienkirche in Lbeck, Germany. Tunder preceded Dieterich Buxtehude in this position, who would later be a great influence to the young J.S. Bach. In those days top church music positions were granted to would-be successors in unusual ways, and the Marienkirche is one such job. Buxtehude gained the job by marrying Tunder's daughter. Upon Buxtehude's retirement, he offered the job to J.S. Bach and Johann Mattheson, but neither of them took it, apparently not wanting to marry Buxtehude's daughter. Eventually Buxtehude's assistant Christian Schieferdecker married Buxtehude's daughter and secured the job. Tunder's Fantasia on Komm, Heiliger Geist is a lovely ornamental treatment of this devotional chorale, which breaks up the melody into small motives and features echo passages hearkening back to Sweelinck and other early organ composers.

Healey Willan (1880-1968) was an English emigrant to Canada. He was organist of St Mary Magdalene Church in Toronto, a notable Anglo-Catholic church in the Anglican Church of Canada, from 1921 to 1967. In the past we've enjoyed singing the congregational setting of his Missa de Sancta Maria Magdalena (S91, S114, S158) from our Hymnal 1982, however, since we infrequently have Rite I sung services, that repertoire is no longer in use at Good Shepherd. His organ music is similar to his choral music with regard to use of stepwise melodic motives, subtle chromaticism, and memorable tunefulness. Maestoso ma con spirit is set in triple meter and is in loose ABA form with a dramatic fourteen-measure dominant pedal point ushering in the last A section.

The anthem Jesu, grant me this I pray is a hymn-anthem based on Orlando Gibbons' Song 13 (the tune is No. 670 in the Hymnal) by Charles Herbert Kitson (1874-1944). Four stanzas of text are treated in a variety of ways, from unison voices to flowing eighth notes to four-part homorhythmic texture and juxtaposing compound meter of 12/8 with simple meter of 4/4. Kitson was organist at Christ Church Cathedral in Dublin, and was later on staff of the Royal College of Music in London.
