Notes for Sunday's Music

Katherine Wright, an active singer in the Choir program for more than twelve years, sings this weekend's services. The daughter of Brian & Susan Wright, Katherine is a junior at Brian Station High School where her particular interests include the golf club and playing percussion in the Band program. She is one of four students representing Bryan Station HS in Commerce Lexington's Leadership Lexington Youth Program this year. A natural teacher from an early age, Katherine also helps to lead the Training Choir and is involved in a number of ministries at Good Shepherd.

Charles Villiers Stanford (1852-1924), an icon of English church music, is well represented this morning. Though born in Ireland, Stanford made England his home for most of his life. His organ music is chromatic yet tuneful. The gentle Lento, with its stepwise voice leading and cantabile style, is reminiscent of Mendelssohn's Songs Without Words. The raucous Allegro is in ABA form, that is, a theme is presented to establish character and key, a second (contrasting) theme in the parallel minor is delivered, then the original them returns juxtaposed with elements of the second theme to provide a climactic conclusion. His anthem A Song of Wisdom is a stirring setting of a text from Ecclesiasticus for trebles and organ. Just as with his organ music, Stanford's choral music tends to be stepwise with subtle chromaticism.

The celebrated oratorio Messiah by G.F. Handel (1685-1759) is unique to his 29 oratorios in that it mixes texts from both the Old and New Testament. "Shepherd" references abound throughout Messiah, and with its gently rocking 12/8 meter, He shall feed his flock is a sublime aria evoking pastoral images. With a generally stepwise melodic contour and slow harmonic rhythm, this miniature masterpiece is dear to the hearts of countless Baroque music fans.

Party Time!

All prospective singers of any age and families are warmly invited to the Iroquois Hunt Club,

7520 Grimes Mill Rd on Saturday 24 August for a pool party hosted by Jerry and Kakie Hester. We'll kick off with lunch at Noon and enjoy swimming, visiting, and wading in Boone Creek (thou shalt have water shoes for the creek if thou so chooseth). Please bring a side dish to share and desired beverages, as well as bug repellent.

This is a great opportunity to meet other choir families before the start of the year and to have fun making a splash at the Hunt Club.  Some food will be provided, but please bring your own beverages. And your swim wear....this is a pool party!  Call John Linker on 859 335 6166 or the parish office on 859 252 1744 for further info.

Choir Reunion Weekend Sept 20-22
We're looking forward to our reunion weekend when singers past and present join together for a time of festivity.  Primarily envisioned as a "homecoming" to celebrate our new "Miller and Wrigley Organ" (Goulding & Wood, Opus 50), this is shaping up to be a weekend of joining our present singers with those who sang decades ago in Good Shepherd.  The weekend will include a gathering of adults on Friday evening, a combined choirs rehearsal Saturday morning, activities for all ages Saturday afternoon, and then singing the Sunday services culminating in evensong at 5:00pm.  We have had excellent response so far, but would like to hear from all choir alumni.  If you haven't done so, please give John Linker at ring on 859 335 6166.  See you in September!
