Notes for Sunday's Music

This weekend we welcome back the choirs after a much-deserved August hiatus. The singers have resumed their weekly routine of preparing glorious music for our upcoming services and are having a great time in doing so. There are still some spots to be filled for this year. Could you be called to this important ministry?

The lovely anthem Draw us in the Spirit's tether by Harold Friedell (1905-1958) is in the standard repertory of American parish choirs. Set in the rich key of A-flat major, the haunting triadic melody features irregular rhythms and spans the range of a 10th. Friedell was a prominent New York musician, holding posts at Calvary Church and later St Bartholomew's Church on Park Avenue. The text is by English theologian Percy Dearmer (1867-1936), and is a most appropriate text to be singing at the start of the academic year as we return from summer travels and take up our work in the liturgy this season.

Eugne Gigout (1844-1925) was a student of Saint-Sans and served at Paris's Saint-Augustin Church for 62 years.  He was also one of the most influential teachers of his day, founding an organ school and teaching such luminaries as Faur and Bollmann. When Alexandre Guilmant died in 1911, Gigout succeeded him as professor of organ & composition at the Paris Conservatory, a highly coveted post. Both the Minuetto and Toccata are from his collection Ten Pieces, published in 1890 during a particularly creative time. The Minuetto features a solo oboe delivering a rather serpentine melody accompanied by flutes and a pizzicato-style bass line. The Toccata is his most famous work, and is also set in the key of B minor. Typical of turn-of-the-century French toccatas, the hands have fast repetitive patterns while the melody is played in the pedal, and this brief work makes the ideal sortie after the service.

Rehearsals for the year are in progress
Rehearsals for the 2014 season are in progress!  There are openings in each group available for those who would like to make a joyful noise!  Our repertoire for this year includes everything from classical masterworks through contemporary works.  From isorhythm to minimalism, we'll sing it all. For a child, there is no better education not only with regard to music, but also verbal communication (often in several languages), social education, and spiritual education are all part of the package.  Be in touch as soon as possible and we'll get you plugged in. 859 252 1744
Music Theory classes commence on Mondays beginning September 8th.  Though originally designed to complement the chorister's education, theory classes are open to anyone of any age regardless of choir affiliation.  Spanning from basic notation to complicated harmonic and formal analysis, theory classes meet you where you are on the path of musical literacy.  Space is limited - please ring 859 252 1744 if you'd like to enrol.  And, as with all of our offerings, this is FREE of charge!

The cubbies in the choir room (storages for hymnals and folders) are always neat and tidy at the beginning of the year.  And note the coffee maker on the bottom right.  That's an important element of the fuel that keeps your choir program up and running!
