This Sunday we welcome former chorister Carrie Shirley as soloist. Carrie was a founding chorister in the re-chartered Good Shepherds Girls' Choir in 2001 and was an active member of the choir program her entire childhood. She recently graduated from Williams College in Williamstown, Massachusetts with a Bachelor of Arts degree in English and Art History. While in college, Carrie sang in an a cappella group called the Ephlats (pronounced E-flats), the longest running co-ed ensemble at Williams College.
Herbert Howells (1892-1983) is the quintessential English church composer of the twentieth century. The first set of psalm preludes was written between 1915-16 as three miniature tone poems which each comment on a particular verse from the Book of Psalms. The third of the set quotes Psalm 23, verse 4. Many of the features that came to characterize Howell's organ music can be seen here, particularly the architectural sweep from the still opening through the blazing and impassioned climax to the quietest of endings. Howells had a preference for minor keys and modal ambiguity, which is certainly heard in this Psalm-Prelude.
Magnificat, BWV 243, by Johann Sebastian Bach (1685-1750) was composed for use at Vespers on Christmas Day, 1723. The introspective Quia respexit humilitatem for solo soprano is the third of this twelve-movement work. The orchestral part translates very well on our organ as the 8' Oboe in the Swell division convincingly replicates the Oboe d'Amore originally scored for this work.
Jean Baptiste Franois Lallouette (1651-1728) served as choirmaster at Rouen Cathedral and later Notre-Dame Cathedral in Paris. His beautifully haunting setting of O mysterium ineffabile dramatically conveys the piety of this Eucharistic text of devotion.

Choir Reunion Weekend Sept 20-22
We're looking forward to our reunion weekend when singers past and present join together for a time of festivity. Primarily envisioned as a "homecoming" to celebrate our new "Miller and Wrigley Organ" (Goulding & Wood, Opus 50), this is shaping up to be a weekend of joining our present singers with those who sang decades ago in Good Shepherd. The weekend will include a gathering of adults on Friday evening, a combined choirs rehearsal Saturday morning, activities for all ages Saturday afternoon, and then singing the Sunday services culminating in evensong at 5:00pm. We have had excellent response so far, but would like to hear from all choir alumni. If you haven't done so, please give John Linker at ring on 859 335 6166. See you in September!
