Notes for Sunday's Music

Sunday's opening voluntary is a gem from the French Baroque organ repertory and gives us a glimpse into liturgical life of 17th-century France as handed to us by Nicolas Lebgue (1631-1702). An "organ mass" is a collection of short versets to be played in alternation with recitation of plainchant for the ordinaries of the mass (Kyrie, Gloria, Sanctus, Agnus Dei). Cantors sing one phrase, the next played by organ, and so on. The organ versets sometimes use the chant as an outline, and other times is freely crafted inspired by the text. Our "Miller and Wrigley" organ is capable of registering this music with close authenticity. A native of Laon in northern France, Lebgue was organist at glise Saint-Merri in Paris from 1664 until his death.

Though French, Charles Gounod (1818-1893) had a fairly international life, having lived in England to absorb English choral music in the 1870s. His dramatic song O divine Redeemer is a favorite of vocal soloists worldwide. Gounod composed both the words (in French) and music to this song in April 1893, six months before his death. Some consider it to be one of his last expressions of faith.

Jean Baptiste Franois Lallouette (1651-1728) served as choirmaster at Rouen Cathedral and later Notre-Dame Cathedral in Paris. His beautifully haunting setting of O mysterium ineffabile dramatically conveys the piety of this Eucharistic text of devotion.

Rehearsals resume next week
Rehearsals for the 2014 season commence next week.  There are openings in each group available for those who would like to make a joyful noise!  Our repertoire for this year includes everything from classical masterworks through contemporary works.  From isorhythm to minimalism, we'll sing it all. For a child, there is no better education not only with regard to music, but also verbal communication (often in several languages), social education, and spiritual education are all part of the package.  Be in touch as soon as possible and we'll get you plugged in. 859 252 1744
Music Theory classes commence on Mondays beginning September 8th.  Though originally designed to complement the chorister's education, theory classes are open to anyone of any age regardless of choir affiliation.  Spanning from basic notation to complicated harmonic and formal analysis, theory classes meet you where you are on the path of musical literacy.  Space is limited - please ring 859 252 1744 if you'd like to enrol.  And, as with all of our offerings, this is FREE of charge!
