Notes for Sunday's Music
Today we welcome former chorister Lindsey Sawyer as soloist. Lindsey was a founding chorister in the re-chartered Good Shepherds Girls' Choir in 2001. This year she will be a junior at Lynchburg College in Lynchburg, Virginia, where she is majoring in health promotion focusing on occupational therapty.
Charles-Marie Widor (1844-1937), though mostly remembered for his organ music, was a pivotal figure in the French musical scene of the early 20th century. He was organist at St Sulpice is Paris for 64 years and was the first to compose symphonies for organ alone rather than for orchestra. Only two of his ten symphonies use plainsong; all of the other melodies are feely composed. The lyrical and winding melodies of the Adagio from Symphony No. 1 create an appropriate atmosphere of piety and devotion prior to the service. The Allegro from Symphony No. 6 is one of his most famous symphonic movements, perhaps trumped in popularity only by his tuneful Toccata from Symphony No. 5. The Allegrois music of raucous seriousness and makes great technical demands of player and instrument. Our new "Miller and Wrigley Organ" (Goulding & Wood Opus 50) is a near perfect vehicle for this literature as well as many other periods and schools of organ composition.
