Notes for Sunday's Music

This Sunday morning we welcome recorder players Kathy Bihl, Margaret Jones, and Susan Weatherford along with harpsichordist Joe Jones offering music to complement the 10:00 service. Affectionately dubbed "The Good Shepherd Consort for Too Early Music," this group enjoys playing the greatest hits of the late 17th and early 18th centuries. Two relatively unknown composers of that time period are Christian Friedrich Witt (c. 1660-1717) and Johann Joachim Quantz (1697-1773). Witt was chamber organist to the court at Gotha (Germany), as position he held for most of his life. His Suite in F-Dur contains the predictable movements found in a suite of that time, Entre, Sarabande, Menuet, Boure, and Menuet. Quantz, also of German origin, was among the most famous flutists of his time, making tours throughout France and England. Among his numerous career moves he also served as composer to Frederick the Great of Prussia. Today he is best known for his treatise Versuch einer Anweisung die Flte traversiere zu spielen (1752), an important work regarding flute performance in the 18th century.

The Voluntaries for the 5:00pm Eucharist are from Girolamo Frescobaldi's (1583-1643) First Book of Toccatas and Partitas (1615). The word toccata originates from the Italian toccare ("to touch"). A keyboard work bearing the title toccata is a virtuoso piece of music featuring fast-moving passages or sections, generally emphasizing the dexterity of the performer's fingers. A highly influential teacher and composer of the late Renaissance and early Baroque, Frescobaldi was organist of St. Peter's Basilica in Rome from 1608-28, and again from 1634 until his death.

Hymn 636 (How firm a foundation) is a favorite across many denominational lines. This hymn uses a pentatonic tune (i.e., there are only five pitches used), and was first printed in a shape-note tunebook in 1832. The tune was shared among many denominations before finding its way into our 1976 Hymnal Supplement, and has rapidly become an iconic favorite.
Margaret Jones and Susan Weatherford along with (not pictured) Kathy Bihl and Joe Jones will augment this Sunday's 10:00am service with Baroque recorder and harpsichord music.

Choir Camp Review by Cathy Penberthy
Left to Right: Cathy Penberthy, Reba Roberts, David Briggs (guest director), Joe Jones, and Lee Jenkins at St Stephen's Church, Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania

Editor's note: Over the summer several of our singers are enjoying attending Royal School of Church Music Summer camps. Two weeks ago Lee Jenkins, Joe Jones, John Linker, Cathy Penberthy, and Reba Roberts attended the RSCM King's College Course in Pennsylvania. As this was her first choir camp, Cathy Penberthy was asked to write a short review of the course. - JKL

Choir camp was rewarding. I arrived at Kings College in Wilkes-Barre, PA not knowing what to expect, but armed with copies of David Briggs' Mass for St. Sulpice and his "O Lord Support Us," among other music by Charles Stanford and Johannes Brahms. The composer, David Briggs, was there himself to lead rehearsals and help us learn the music. There were many rehearsals. The 200 singers were divided into "house rehearsals" with others of their age and ability (treble boys house, teen girls house, adult house, etc.) The whole camp choir sings Evensong almost every day in St. Stephen's Church's, airing some of the rehearsed music, so campers learn and perform music on a daily basis. There are also extra-curricular events and workshops, which are fun. For example, the senior warden conducted a tour of St. Stephen's stained glass windows. I met lots of people from all over the U.S. who share an interest in singing sacred music. I'm grateful for the experience and hope to repeat it next year.
