With our new organ capable of playing all representative periods of organ literature, we are exposed to music never heard before in Good Shepherd. One such work is the fourth movement of Symphony No. 3 by Louis Vierne (1870-1937). Vierne wrote six symphonies for the organ, between 1899 and 1930.Their respective keys climb one by one up the steps of the scale: D minor, E minor, F sharp minor, G minor, A minor, B minor. A seventh and last symphony, in C, would have completed the series were he not forced to abandon the work due to ill health. The luscious Adagiois like a "song without words" and is inspired by the long winding melodies of Wagner and Franck. The piece is based completely on material heard in the first few measures. The melodies prayerful and seem to desire resolution, which is realized beautifully when they reappear in major played by Harmonic Fluteand later string celestes.
Dieterich Buxtehude (1637-1707), though originally of Danish origin, was one of the most important figures of the north German Baroque. Prelude, Fugue, and Chaconne is one of his most widely performed works in recent years. As a teacher of the young J.S. Bach, Buxtehude's influence has been felt throughout the generations. The Prelude opens with virtuosic pedal work and is characterized by alternation between imitative and non-imitative passages (accentuated by manual changes). The Fugue is a straightforward representation of this genre followed by a "bridge" section that leads into the Chaconne. A chaconne is a continuous variation, usually in triple meter and a major key and usually features a short, repeating bass line or harmonic progression.
Sir John Goss's (1800-1880) captivating anthem O Saviour of the world, composed in 1869, is an emphatic treatment of this text. With a generally stepwise melody throughout, melodic leaps are reserved for the most important of phrases (e.g., "save us and help us"). Goss succeeded Thomas Attwood as organist at St Paul's Cathedral in London, and Goss's most famous pupil was Sir John Stainer.
