Alexandre Guilmant (1837-1911) was organist at La Trinit in Paris for 30 years, the same parish later served by Messiaen. It was Guilmant who played the dedicatory recital of the Cavaill-Coll organ in the American Cathedral, Paris, in 1887 (where Good Shepherd Choir sang just two weeks ago). His Fugue on Adoro te devote is a Romantic treatment of an old form, the subject of which is a 17th-century chant. The earliest known source for the melody is a Parisian Processional, dating from 1697, where it is set to a hymn for the Feats of Corpus Christi. The grand Toccata in F, BWV 540 by J.S. Bach (1685-1750) couples a pedal toccata with a ritornello section in a ratio of 2:3. In addition to length and thoroughness, the Toccata is distinguished by its contrapuntal handling, harmonic progressions and dramatic pedal-points, while it combines ideas current in other schools of toccata composition: tonic/dominant pedal points of "southern" toccatas (e.g., Pachelbel, Fischer, Kerll), and pedal solos of "northern" toccatas (e.g., Buxtehude, Bruhns). This work is just one of many examples in which Bach synthesized different compositional styles into his own artistic expression.
