Notes for Sunday's Music

Both Voluntaries this Sunday morning are by French Romantic composer Thodore Dubois (1837-1924). Prior to succeeding Camille Saint-Sans as organist at La Madeleine in Paris, Dubois held choirmaster positions at La Madeleine and Ste Clotilde. Both his Processional in D (Andante non troppo e molto sostenuto) and Grand Chœur are representative of his style, which includes pianistic octave doubling and dramatic opera-influenced elements. A cantabile second theme often appears in his works, and in the Grand Chœur, this takes the form of a fughetta.

The Anthem Teach me, O Lord is one of Thomas Attwood's (1765-1838) most famous and most performed choral miniatures performed today. Hailing from London, Attwood was well traveled, and studied with Mozart in Vienna in the mid-1780s. Teach me, O Lord shows the influence of Mozart in its directness, economical use of harmony, and melodic contour accentuating the natural stresses of the text. Attwood was organist at St. Paul's Cathedral in London, and later in life, became friends with Felix Mendelssohn.

Congratulations to Zach Denniston on achieving the Silver Award

Recently, Zach Denniston, a chorister in Good Shepherd's Treble Choir, was examined and awarded the Silver Award by the Royal School of Church Music.  As part of the Silver Award preparation, Zach had several prepared items, including anthems, canticles, and a psalm.  There was also a sight reading component as well as questions assessing his knowledge about the church year, the function of the choir, and his role as a leader in this program.  After having been tested by a regional examiner, Zach's results are entered into the RSCM's log of successful exams as "highly commended."

Congratulations, Zach!

Summer Choir Continues through July

Summer Choir Sings in July

Do you like to sing? Well then, Summer Choir is for you! During the summer there are no midweek rehearsals, just a rehearsal the hour prior to the morning service. Repertoire for the summer will include favorites over the past year as well as other easy reads from standard choral repertoire. Be in touch with John Linker (859 335 6166; john@johnlinker.com) if you'd like to sing any of the Sundays throughout July.
