Notes for Sunday's Music

The opening voluntary, Robert J. Greene's spritely Danza del Espirito Santo (Dance of the Holy Spirit), received First Prize in the American Guild of Organists Region V Composer's Competition of the American Guild of Organists in spring 2011. It was premiered by John Linker in a recital at Christ Church Cathedral on 12 June 2011. Compositional ideas are borrowed from Louis Vierne's Carillon de Westminster, Maurice Ravel's Bolero, and other sources. The original title was to be Carillon, but after a couple performances, the composer declared it had a Latin feel, and renamed the piece Danza del Espirito Santo, influence bearing from the composer's time of teaching in Mexico. In spite of its history, it was only recently published when it won First Prize in the Lexington Chapter AGO composition contest three years ago.  It is available through MorningStar Press.

Summer Choir Begins this Sunday

Do you like to sing? Well then, Summer Choir is for you! During the summer there are no midweek rehearsals, just a rehearsal the hour prior to the morning service. Repertoire for the summer will include favorites over the past year as well as other easy reads from standard choral repertoire. Be in touch with John Linker (859 335 6166; john@johnlinker.com) if you'd like to sing any of the Sundays throughout June and July.

Training Choir on Tour Last Week

The Training Choir had a lovely tour to St Hubert's Parish in Clark County on 25 May.

This is their second annual tour to St Hubert's, and by all accounts,it was a wonderful success.

Thanks to Kakie Hester, Tanner Jones, and Katherine Wright for their diligent work in training up these young singers to step into the role of chorister.

We look forward to this group continuing to serve as a feeder program for the Treble Choir.

Bless these angelic voices!

This past weekend our choirs joined forces with the Choir of First Presbyterian Church, Evansville, Indiana. What a joy it was to combine singers for a weekend of excellent music, camaraderie, and worship together. Thanks to all of our logistical team for making this weekend smooth. Particular thanks are due to Lee Jenkins and Reba Roberts for their follow through of countless details, to all the Good Shepherd parishioners who hosted home stays, and to all who teamed together for this festival weekend.
