Notes for Sunday's Music
Malcolm Archer's Anthem Come, my Way, my Truth, my Life is a delicious treatment of this famous text by George Herbert. Set in the buoyant meter of 3/4, the outer verses are in F major, while the middle verse is given to the men's voices alone and set in the third-related key of D major. Malcolm Archer has served as organist for Norwich, Bristol, Wells, and St. Paul's Cathedrals, and currently serves as Director of Chapel Music at Winchester College.

Hymn 572 is rather infrequently sung, but is one of the most stunning combinations of text and tune in our Hymnal. The antiwar text, couched in strong prophetic rhetoric, matched with an equally strong tune punctuated by martial dotted rhythms, is in itself a paradox. It reflects the paradox of much of the Gospel, especially the paradox of the painful crucifixion and death of Christ, which is seen by some as defeat, but by others as victory over sin and death.

Bach's Fugue in D Major, BWV 532, is one of his most joyous works and represents very well the joy we share on this day of Baptism. It is joyous and even humorous at times and travels through key areas D, A, D, b, f#, c#, E, A, D. Near the end, intensity builds as an extended dominant pedal point with fragments of the subject is then followed by a final entry of the subject in D Major in the pedal. A substantial fragment of the subject in the left hand leads to the coda, a cadenza of manual and pedal arpeggios. The concluding section is reminiscent of the opening passages and shows the influence of the stylus fantasticus, a hallmark of the north German school. There's plenty of "fancy footwork" in this piece, and congregants (particularly kids!) are invited to the quire to watch the organist's feet cover a lot of territory.

Summer Choir Sings in June & July

Do you like to sing? Well then, Summer Choir is for you! During the summer there are no midweek rehearsals, just a rehearsal the hour prior to the morning service. Repertoire for the summer will include favorites over the past year as well as other easy reads from standard choral repertoire. Be in touch with John Linker (859 335 6166; john@johnlinker.com) if you'd like to sing any of the Sundays throughout June and July.

Heart and Voice Uniting: 2014 Association of Anglican Musicians Conference

By John Linker, Organist/Choirmaster

Church of the Good Shepherd

Lexington, Kentucky

The week of June 14-20 I had the pleasure of joining over 300 colleagues from across the nation in Washington, DC for the annual Conference of the Association of Anglican Musicians (AAM). In addition, a sizeable number of clergy were present for the week, including four bishops. It was a tightly run conference all around, and apart from the heat wave that hit Washington last week, it was a picture perfect time of liturgies, concerts, lectures, panel discussions, and camaraderie among those of us serving in similar situations, sharing parallel joys and challenges. If I had just one word to describe the experience, it would be "enlightening." I was inspired by the music, encouraged by colleagues, and reaffirmed by sermons and lectures.
