Notes for Sunday's Music
Dan Locklair's Rubrics is a liturgical suite for organ in five movements. It was composed during the spring of 1988 in Winston-Salem, North Carolina on a commission from the Organ Artists Series of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania for their tenth anniversary year celebration. The work was premiered in Pittsburg on 16 April 1989 by the American organist Mary Preston. Each movement is a meditation on rubrics from the 1979 Book of Common Prayer. (Rubrics are the italicized "instructions" given throughout the prayer book. Originally these instructions were in red, hence the name "rubrics.") "The Peace may be exchanged" is a lyrical aria, featuring a solo diapason color and accompanied by strings and double pedal throughout. Echoing Fr Cole's sermon from last Sunday, we have programmed a repeat of Love bade me welcome from Five Mystical Songs by Ralph Vaughan Williams so that the congregation has yet another opportunity to meditate through this extraordinary text by 17th-century priest George Herbert. The music by Vaughan Williams includes an orchestral style of accompaniment complete with luscious strings and cantabile solo registers. The work received its first performance on 14 September 1911, at the Three Choirs Festival in Worcester (England), with Vaughan Williams conducting.

Choir Europe Tour 2013
One of the purposes of this choir pilgrimage is to visit our sister Episcopal parishes in Europe and to visit many other holy sites along the way. Just as there is an Episcopal Diocese of Lexington, with its mother church (Cathedral) located in Lexington and parishes spanning a defined geographic region, there is also a Diocese of Europe (technically called the "Convocation of Episcopal Churches in Europe"). The Cathedral for this diocese is located in Paris and twenty-two parishes are found throughout Europe. The Director of Music at the American Cathedral is Kentucky native Zach Ullery, Good Shepherd's former Assistant Organist from 2001-2008.
