Notes for Sunday's Music

Joining the 10:00am service this Sunday is baritone Reginald Smith, JR. Reggie Smith was a staff singer in Good Shepherd choirs during his undergraduate years at University of Kentucky from 2008-2013, and is presently a member of Houston Grand Opera Studio of Houston, Texas. Two months ago Reggie made the list of Buzzfeed.com's Community Post "African American Opera Singers are the Best Opera Singers in the World" praising the merits of seven rising stars of the opera world, in which Reggie was dubbed "The Powerhouse." A warm welcome back to Reggie. For more information and to see Reggie's busy performance schedule, please visit www.reginaldsmithjr.com.

This Sunday our 5:00pm service will be adorned with music by Kentucky Baroque Trumpets. The instruments in this ensemble are "natural trumpets." Unlike modern trumpets, which have valves allowing the player to easily navigate all notes of the chromatic scale, natural trumpets have no valves and rely on the various partials of the overtone series to play notes. In other words, it's a very difficult instrument to play. This afternoon they will play works by Manfredini, Bach, and Handel. Kentucky Baroque Trumpets is under the direction of Don Johnson. For more information about this ensemble, please visit www.kybaroquetrumpets.org
Summer Choir Continues through June & July

Summer Choir Sings in June & July

Do you like to sing? Well then, Summer Choir is for you! During the summer there are no midweek rehearsals, just a rehearsal the hour prior to the morning service. Repertoire for the summer will include favorites over the past year as well as other easy reads from standard choral repertoire. Be in touch with John Linker (859 335 6166; john@johnlinker.com) if you'd like to sing any of the Sundays throughout June and July.

Association of Anglican Musicians National Conference Last Week

By John Linker, Organist/Choirmaster

Note: This is not an entire review, but just an immediate report. A more detailed reflection of this conference will appear at a later date.

This past week I had the pleasure of joining over 300 colleagues from across the nation in Washington, DC for the annual Conference of the Association of Anglican Musicians (AAM). In addition, a sizeable number of clergy were present for the week, including four bishops. It was a tightly run conference all around, and apart from the heat wave that hit Washington last week, it was a picture perfect time of liturgies, concerts, lectures, panel discussions, and camaraderie among those of us serving in similar situations, sharing parallel joys and challenges. If I had just one word to describe the experience, it would be "enlightening." I was inspired by the music, encouraged by colleagues, and reaffirmed by sermons and lectures.

Venues I had the pleasure of visiting include the Church of Ascension & St Agnes, Basilica Shrine of the Immaculate Conception (RC Cathedral), the National Cathedral, St Paul's K Street, St John's Georgetown, St Columba's, Virginia Theological Seminary, Episcopal High School, Christ Church Alexandria, St Mary's Arlington, and St John's Lafayette Square.

Personal highlights (not on the conference schedule) included scoring an invitation to a private party honoring the Choir of Lincoln Cathedral, the visiting choir at National Cathedral last Sunday, and also receiving a private tour of and observing a rehearsal at Bolling Air Force Base where a friend has been serving for the past decade.

It was a most inspiring week, and I look forward to sharing some more details with you once I've had some sleep and collected my thoughts.
