Notes for Sunday's Music

This weekend is the last official round of services in the choir's academic year, though Summer Choir and Touring Choir will be on active duty until the choir's tour to Europe at the end of June. Thank you to all members and families in our choir program for a wonderful year! If you're reading this, and are not already an active member in the choir program, please do join us for the 2013/14 year! Call John Linker at 859 335 6166 and he'll be happy to give all pertinent details.

Girolamo Frescobaldi
was the most important keyboard composer of the late Italian Renaissance. Most of his keyboard works can be played with equal success on either harpsichord or organ. Perhaps Frescobaldi's most salient musical feature is the "durezze e ligature" style employed in his toccatas, with spellbinding moments of tension and release. Frescobaldi was organist at St Peter's Basilica in the Vatican. The Anthem
I will sing with the Spirit by Scottish composer David Goodenough succinctly sets the text of the Motto of the Royal School of Church Music, Psallam spirit et mente - I will sing with the Spirit and with the understanding also. Goodenough is Director of Music at Fettes College in Edinburgh, Scotland.

News

Organ installation continues

Wires, wires, wires!  That's what the organ builders were contending with this past week.  Because the organ uses modern electropneumatic action, there is much internal wiring to be assembled.  While the visible part of the organ installation is nearly complete, a lot of activity is happening in the chambers.  We're most hopeful for the first sounds of the instrument to be heard towards the end of next week.  Stay tuned!

Evensong This Sunday

Please join us for Evensong on Sunday June 2nd at 5:00pm, which is the final choral service of the academic year. At this service choristers who are advancing in the Royal School of Church Music curriculum will be recognized and we join together in celebrating a wonderful year of music in Good Shepherd. A reception follows in the Undercroft.

Choirs are Enrolling for 2013-14
We're planning an action-packed academic year, and we want YOU!  Good Shepherd offers choirs for all ages, from preschool through retirement.  Instruction in music theory, choral repertoire, foreign languages, rehearsal, performance, spirituality, and liturgical education are all part of the package.  And all of this is offered for FREE!  Contact John Linker, Organist/Choirmaster, for more information.
RSCM Promotions at Evensong this Sunday
This Sunday we recognize the achievements of our talented young singers.  The Training Choir will be recognized at the 10:00 service for their splendid year of music making.  During Evensong at 5:00pm three trebles will be promoted to their next levels of choristership.  Nora Cowen and Rylan Thomas will be advancing to Junior Chorister (light blue ribbon) and Zach Denniston will be advancing to Senior Chorister (red ribbon).  This advancement reflects their dedication and commitment to learning, which involves choir activities a minimum of three days a week during the academic year (Sundays, Mondays, Wednesdays, and sometimes Saturdays).  Congratulations to these choristers on their accomplishements!  Psallam spiritu et mente.  I will sing with the Spirit and with the understanding also.
Quiet as a Church Mouse
Bob Duffy, the master wood carver who hand carved all of the casework for the organ, likes to put something special in each of his instruments, something like a "maker's mark."

Unless you get on a ladder, you're unlikely to see this, but Bob has carved a small church mouse into the woodwork for the Antiphonal organ case.  This little critter is located near the tower door above the Festival Trumpet and at the foot of the facade pipes.

Perhaps the children of the parish will give him a name?  Let us know if your kids have any creative ideas!

Concerts in Good Shepherd

Friday 21 June at 7:30pm
- The dedicatory recital of our new organ, the Miller and Wrigley Organ built by Goulding & Wood Organbuilders.

This week we received word that Bruce Neswick, the originally scheduled recitalist for the dedication, fractured his arm in a cycling accident.  He is expected to make a full recovery, but his arm will be in a cast until August, preventing him from keeping concert engagements scheduled for this summer.

In Bruce's place, resident organist John Linker, along with Owen Sammons (organist at St Peter's in Paris, KY) and Schuyler Robinson (organ professor at University of Kentucky), will present the dedicatory recital with a program similar to what Bruce intended to play.

Therefore our dedicatory recital will be moving forward as scheduled but with a few different sets of hands and feet!  Bruce Neswick will be rescheduled to perform at a future date in Good Shepherd.  We wish Bruce the best as he heals from his injury!

Advance Planning - Highlights for 2013/14

If you haven't done so already, please be in touch with John Linker and he will provide you with pertinent details.
