Notes for Sunday's Music

As this Sunday is Trinity Sunday, we sing and hear music that expresses the Triune God. No Trinity Sunday is complete without the singing of Hymn 362, Holy, holy, holy. This text and tune first appeared in Hymns Ancient & Modern in 1861 (though text dates to 1826). The tune is triadic and quite memorable, and closely resembles other tunes which inherently outline the tonic triad such as the Gregorian Psalm Tone 5, and Wachet auf (Sleepers Wake, Hymn 61 & 62, by Philipp Nicolai in 1599). The tune name Nicaea is a reference to the Council of Nicaea, 325 AD, at which the doctrine of the Trinity was defined and formulated into an early form of what has become known as the Nicene Creed.

Hymn 421, the English version of Allein Gott in der Hh, sei Ehr, is sung at the retiring procession. The text is the German paraphrase of Canticle 20, Gloria in excelsis, by Nikolaus Decius. Decius's hymn, originally written in Low German, was sung to its adapted plainsong melody for the first time on Easter Day, 5 April 1523 in Brunswick. The English version we now sing is by the Rev'd Dr. F. Bland Tucker, a graduate of Virginia Seminary and an editor of The Hymnal 1940.

Summer Choir Continues through June & July

Summer Choir Sings in June & July

Do you like to sing? Well then, Summer Choir is for you! During the summer there are no midweek rehearsals, just a rehearsal the hour prior to the morning service. Repertoire for the summer will include favorites over the past year as well as other easy reads from standard choral repertoire. Be in touch with John Linker (859 335 6166; john@johnlinker.com) if you'd like to sing any of the Sundays throughout June and July.
