The Feast of Pentecost commemorates the descent of the Holy Spirit on the twelve apostles. The playfulness of the Holy Spirit is encapsulated in Sweelinck's Fantasia, which features echo effects and scalar passages that remind the listener of rushing wind. During Sweelinck's time organs were not allowed to be used during services in Calvinist Holland, but were permitted to play before and after services and for public recitals. Sir William H. Harris's hymn-anthem Come down, O Love divine is an SATB arrangement of his own tune North Petherton, and reflects yet another facet of the Holy Spirit in its beauty of simplicity. Harris held prominent positions at Lichfield Cathedral (where Good Shepherd Choir sang a week's residency in 2006), New College and Christ Church, Oxford, and St George's Chapel, Windsor. |

Organ installation continues
Beginning Monday 20 May the final "visible" installment of our new organ (the Miller and Wrigley Organ built by Goulding & Wood Organbuilders) will be assembled in the church. The north and south Great divisions in the quire will be assembled. The console will also be delivered and all will finally be hooked up in Good Shepherd. Tonal finishing will then commence (a process of about a month) to ensure proper balances between the divisions, and head voicer Brandon Woods will work tirelessly so that each pipe speaks as it should. Training Choir on tour This Sunday 19 May the Training Choir (children aged 5-7) will go on tour to St Hubert's Parish to sing their 10:30am Eucharist. Contact Kakie Hester for further information. The Training Choir wraps up their year by singing the 10:00am Eucharist on Sunday 2 June. During this service they will be recognized for this past year of service.
Evensong June 2nd
Please join us for Evensong on Sunday June 2nd at 5:00pm, which is the final choral service of the academic year. At this service choristers who are advancing in the Royal School of Church Music curriculum will be recognized and we join together in celebrating a wonderful year of music in Good Shepherd. A reception follows in the Undercroft. Choirs are Enrolling for 2013-14We're planning an action-packed academic year, and we want YOU! Good Shepherd offers choirs for all ages, from preschool through retirement. Instruction in music theory, choral repertoire, foreign languages, rehearsal, performance, spirituality, and liturgical education are all part of the package. And all of this is offered for FREE! Contact John Linker, Organist/Choirmaster, for more information. |
Chamber of Secrets Most of the work pertaining to organ installation last week was "behind the scenes" construction. Pictured here is the box for the Choir division in the north chamber. These shades (operated by a pedal from the console) control the expression of this division (i.e., the "volume"). The Choir division is one of two expressive divisions in the new organ, the other being the Swell division on the south side of the quire. The Choir division will contain both the softest and most powerful ranks of the organ. Within this box will be the bombastic 8' Tuba (complete with its own high pressure blower), the flute cornet (pronounced kor-NAY) of 8, 4, 2 2/3, 2, 1 3/5, and 1 1/3 pitches, and the delicate whisper of the 8' Dulciana and 8' Unda Maris. |
Concerts in Good Shepherd |
Bluegrass Concert TOMORROW! - Friday May 17th Tanner and Nathan Jones are two brothers that have been playing bluegrass and old-time music around Central Kentucky for the last 10 years. On May 17th at 7:00pm in Church of the Good Shepherd, 533 East Main Street at Bell Court, they will be joined by members of the UK Bluegrass ensemble for a rousing concert of bluegrass standards and old-time fiddle tunes. Their set list has all the old favorites, including songs from the Stanley Brothers, the Carter Family, J.D. Crowe, and those old gospel standards. The concert is free, but a suggested donation of $15 per person will help to underwrite Good Shepherd's tour of Italy and France next month.
Friday 21 June at 7:30pm - The dedicatory recital of our new organ, the Miller and Wrigley Organ built by Goulding & Wood Organbuilders. The dedicatory recitalist is Bruce Neswick, Professor of Organ at Indiana University. His repertoire will include works by Bach, Franck, Howells, Hancock, and Hurd, as well as spontaneous improvisations on submitted themes. |
