Notes for Sunday's Music

On this Sunday after Ascension we are reminded through the music of the season of Christ's glorious ascension into heaven. Mendelssohn's Above all praise and all majesty is a short but majestic anthem for four voices characterized by dotted rhythms and a soprano part in a triumphantly high range. With our use of the Steiner three-stop positive organ over the last year (with grateful thanks to the Kentucky Bach Choir and the Lexington Chapter of the American Guild of Organists), we have been exposed to a wealth of organ music for hands only without pedal. Johann Christoph Bach (1642-1703) was the son of Heinrich Bach, Johann Sebastian Bach's great uncle, hence he was Johann Sebastian's first cousin once removed. He was also the uncle of Maria Barbara Bach, J.S. Bach's first wife. He is not to be confused with Johann Sebastian's Bach's son, Johann Christoph Friedrich Bach. Typical of the period, his prelude consists of virtuosic scales (to sound improvised) and a fugue that follows strict form until the reappearance of scales towards the end of the work.

Organ installation continues

This week the installation team from Goulding & Wood are busily assembling the chests for the Choir division (in the north chamber) and installing the cantilever beams on both north and south quire walls which will support the Great division. The largest pipes of the organ are being placed into their off-set racks along the wall in the chamber. The final shipment of the organ arrives Monday 20 May.  Live streaming of the installation progress may be viewed here.

Training Choir on tour

The Training Choir (children aged 5-7) will go on tour to St Hubert's Parish on Sunday 19 May to sing their 10:30am Eucharist. Contact Kakie Hester for further information.

A Pipe Dream
Here is a photo of an event you may never see again.  In the foreground is the 16' Principal on display prior to installation.  In the background are pipes for the 16' Trombone (poplar resonators) and the 16' Subbass (the darker stained wood).  The 16' Subbass is enjoying its third incarnation in the organs of Good Shepherd.  It was first built for the original 1926 Pilcher organ, was later recycled into the 1970 Holloway organ, and is being used again in the 2013 Goulding & Wood organ (named the Miller and Wrigley Organ).

Once installed, these sets of pipes will be in the north chamber and out of public view.

Other ranks of pipes that are being reused in the new instrument include the old Great 8' Principal (becoming the Choir 8' Open Diapason), the old Great 8' Rohrflote (becoming the Choir 8' Chimney Flute), the old Great 4' Oktav (becoming the Choir 4' Principal), and the Pedal 4' Schalmey (retaining its same name).

Concerts in Good Shepherd

Friday 17 May at 7:00pm - Bluegrass Concert - Tanner and Nathan Jones are two brothers that have been playing bluegrass and old-time music around Central Kentucky for the last 10 years. On May 17th at 7:00pm in Church of the Good Shepherd, 533 East Main Street at Bell Court, they will be joined by members of the UK Bluegrass ensemble for a rousing concert of bluegrass standards and old-time fiddle tunes. Their set list has all the old favorites, including songs from the Stanley Brothers, the Carter Family, J.D. Crowe, and those old gospel standards. A suggested donation of $15 per person will help to underwrite Good Shepherd's tour of Italy and France next month.

Friday 21 June at 7:30pm - The dedicatory recital of our new organ, the Miller and Wrigley Organ built by Goulding & Wood Organbuilders. The dedicatory recitalist is Bruce Neswick, Professor of Organ at Indiana University. His repertoire will include works by Bach, Franck, Howells, Hancock, and Hurd, as well as spontaneous improvisations on submitted themes.
