Notes for Sunday's Music
The Agnus Dei sung this Sunday is from William Byrd's Mass for Four Voices. William Byrd (ca. 1540-1623) was a practicing Roman Catholic in England at a time when it simply wasn't safe to be so. In fact, RC families were charged huge fines for practicing their religion (in 1587 it was 200), and in come cases even put to death, but it seems that Byrd had friends in high places at court (possibly the Queen herself), so this fee was usually waved for his family. The great courage it took for a composer to set texts in Latin, much less publish them, is a testament to the intimacy and deeply spiritual nature of this music.

Byrd published his three Mass settings between c.1593 and c.1595 separately (Mass for Three Voices, Mass for Four Voices, and Mass for Five Voices). For the most part these settings are assumed to have been performed by small amateur forces in private settings given the religious climate of England at the time. The four-part is probably the most popular and intensely personal of the three.
