Notes for Sunday's Music

The opening voluntary is J.S. Bach's treatment of three verses of the German Easter hymn Christ ist erstanden from his Orgelbchlein. Of the 46 chorales in this book, this is the only one that sets three stanzas of text, perhaps to honor the Trinity, or perhaps to honor the "three Marys." Bach makes plentiful use of the suspirans (sixteenth rest followed by three sixteenth notes), which is the rhythm of the word Hallelujah. The melody is derived from the plainsong sequence Victimae paschali laudes (sung at the Sequence last Sunday), which is traditionally sung through the entire Easter season and on Ascension Day in many German churches.

The Anthem This joyful Eastertide is the happy matching of an English text with a Dutch tune. The tune name Vruechten comes from the key word of the Dutch text Hoe groot de Vruechten zijn door Christus' dood verworven (how great are the fruits of Christ's death). The author George R. Woodward knew the original text, but used it only as a starting point for the English version.

The closing voluntary is Carillon-Sortie by French composer Henri Mulet. Intended to imitate the ringing of church bells, an ostinato figure permeates the work accompanying the first theme while the second theme uses a descending fourth pattern, again emulating the sound of cascading bells. Mulet served Parisian churches St Roch (for 10 years, where he wrote Carillon-Sortie)and St-Philippe-du-Roule, and was a student of Guilmant and Widor. In 1937 he burned all of his manuscripts and moved to Draguignan in the southeast of France where he spent the last 30 years of his life in seclusion.

Sunday Afternoon Concert Program Notes

Fanfare - Ronald Arnatt (b.1930)

English-born composer and organist Ronald Arnatt has served prominent churches in the United States, and was also national president of the American Guild of Organists and the Association of Anglican Musicians.  His Fanfare features the beautiful trumpets on the Miller & Wrigley organ.

Prelude and Fugue in e minor - Nicolaus Bruhns (1665-1697)

North German composer Nicolaus Bruhns came from a family of musicians.  From an early age he was an accomplished organist and pianist in addition to playing violin and viola da gamba.  Bruhns developed expertise in the relatively new double-stop technique, which enables a string player to sound multiple notes at once.  He delighted in taking his violin into the organ loft where he could create the impression that several musicians were playing at once-he would play the upper parts on the violin while accompanying himself with an appropriate pedal bass part with his feet!  Bruhns composed music for violin, viola da gamba, and piano, but these works have been lost to time.  His 12 cantatas and four organ pieces are all that remain.  Bruhns was a composition student of Dieetrich Buxtehude, and his organ compositions reveal Buxtehude's influence.  These compositions are constructed in many sections with frequently changing meters, occasionally held together with fantasy-like passages.  In his e minor prelude and fugue, the prelude is relatively short and toccata-like; the longer fugue is actually two fugues that are connected with a long improvisatory section that includes a harp-like motif.  As is typical of North German Baroque composers, the pedal is given equal importance to the other voices.

Choral No. 2 in b minor - Csar Franck (1822-1890)

The greatest organ composer of the French school in the 19th century was Csar-Auguste Franck.  Born in Belgium, he was educated in France and was organ professor at the Paris Conservatoire.  He served as organist at Ste. Clotilde in Paris for over 30 years, and composed with the 1859 Cavaill-Coll organ there in mind.  Franck's final major works for the organ are the three chorales composed during the last year of his life.  These three fantasias are not based on a pre-existing chorale melody, but do contain sections that suggest hymn writing.  Choral No. 2 in b minor is in a variation form, that of a modified passacaglia.  The theme is first heard in the pedal and reappears throughout the piece, occasionally interrupted by interludes in recitative or free fantasy style.  Two quiet sections, midway through the piece and again at the end, exemplify the type of musical writing which suggests the mysticism and religious idealism reflected in Franck's works.

Dans la Gloire des Invalides

IV. You will proclaim the mercy, love, and goodness of God, our Salvation - Marcel Dupr (1886-1971)

French composer Marcel Dupr was also born into a musical family.  His father was an organist, and served as young Dupr's first piano teacher.  His father believed strongly in developing a good piano background before undertaking study on another instrument.  Marcel was enchanted by the organ, however, and would use his toy blocks to make organ pedals that he pretended to play as he practiced. When Marcel was eventually allowed to study organ, he could only practice organ 15 minutes for every 45 minutes spent at the piano.  His diligent practice paid off as he became well-known for his organ concerts, including a series of ten concerts he gave in Paris in 1920 in which he performed the complete Bach organ works-from memory!  Dupr was somewhat of a child prodigy, composing his first piece at the age of 10.  He continued composing as he concertized all over Europe and America, often composing in hotels or on trains.  Dupr was a master improviser, and some of his most famous compositions had their origins as concert improvisations.  He also incorporated smaller improvised liturgical meditations, or versets, into his service playing at the Cathedral of Notre Dame, and later at St. Sulpice.  "In the Glory of the Invalides" were eleven versets Dupr improvised at the dedication of the Beuchet-Debierre organ at St. Louis des Invalides, Paris, on December 8, 1957.  At the dedication ceremony, the celebrant intoned eleven separate one-sentence invocations in Latin to restate the mission of the new organ.  Following each invocation, Dupr improvised a verset based upon the message of the invocation.  A live recording of the dedication was the source for transcriptions of these improvisations, done by University of Alaska Professor of Music David A. Stech in 2004.

Christ ist erstanden - Hermann Schroeder (1904-1984)

For organists, Hermann Schroeder is one of the most important German composers of the 20th century.  His music combines elements of the Middle Ages, 20th century polyphony, and the linear, atonal writing of Hindemith.  "Christ is risen" is from his Sechs Orgelchorales, a group of hymn tune-based pieces for the liturgical year.  The continually rising melodic line which outlines the Christ ist erstanden hymn tune and the driving rhythm in the pedal combine into an exciting piece for the Easter season.

Organist Jane Johnson to Perform this Sunday in Good Shepherd

Jane Johnson

This Sunday we welcome organist Jane Johnson to play the 4:15pm recital. Jane received a B.M.M.E. degree from the University of Kentucky where she studied organ with Prof. Arnold Blackburn. She earned a Master of Music degree with an emphasis in Sacred Music from UK, and a Master of Arts degree with an emphasis in Church Music from Lexington Theological Seminary. She continues to study organ and harpsichord with Dr. Schuyler Robinson.  Jane has been a church organist for over 30 years.  Since 2000 she has served as organist at Crestwood Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in Lexington. Jane is a Colleague of the American Guild of Organists, and also holds the Guild's Service Playing Certificate.  She is currently in her second year as Dean of the Lexington Chapter AGO. When not on the organ bench, Jane plays upright bass with the Backroom Bluegrass Band and is learning to play hammered dulcimer.  She is also Director of Student Affairs for the College of Fine Arts at UK.

Congratulations to Tanner Jones!
Tanner Jones

Tanner Jones, a staff singer in Good Shepherd's choirs and assistant director of the Training Choir, has recently received a Fulbright research grant that will fund his dissertation research in South Korea. The grant is for a yearlong fieldwork project, wherein he will be studying the music of Jeju Island, located off the southern coast of Korea. In particular, he will be observing the music of the island's shamanic rituals, which has a deep history in Korea and is considered to be the progenitor of many musical practices in the country. He will also be looking at the evolving "preservation" of these traditional musics, and how their practices are disseminated to different venues, audiences, and participants that are removed from their original ritual context. Tanner departs for South Korea late August.

Thanks to the Choirs for a Blessed Holy Week and Easter
The Choir at Easter Vigil, 4/19/14
A note from the Organist/Choirmaster:

What a blessing it was to celebrate a grand and meaningful Holy Week with this terrific band of singers.  This is the one week a year where we observe the quasi monastic life of daily services and prayer, and I can't think of a more rewarding group to spend this time with.  Nearly each of the singers in all of our choirs (apart from the Training Choir) met Wednesday for rehearsal, sang the Maundy Thursday service, Good Friday service (with the men pulling double duty to sing the noon service), the Easter Vigil service, and were present for both 9:00 and 11:15 services on Easter Day.  In addition, about a dozen singers led Compline each Wednesday night during Lent.  Thanks to the sum of the parts, the whole of the choir program is a group of great dedication and enthusiasm, as well as possessing the ability to unite music and liturgy at a very high level.  Thank you all for a deeply rewarding Triduum and Easter Day!
