Notes for Sunday's Music
Louis Vierne (1870-1937) was organist of Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris from 1900 until his death in 1937, where he died while performing his 1750th organ recital. Born legally blind, he showed an innate talent for music from age 2. He studied and later taught at the Paris Conservatoire, but never became head of the organ department. In large French churches there are usually two organs, one grand-orgue at the west end and a smaller orgue de chœur at the east end near the altar. Messe Solennelle (Solemn Mass) was originally composed for the two organs playing in dialogue, with the smaller orgue de chœur accompanying the choir. The premiere occurred in 1901 in St Sulpice, Paris, with Vierne and his mentor Charles-Marie Widor performing the two organ parts. The edition used by our choir combines the two organ parts into one. Set in the joyful key of A Major, Gloria in excelsis is divided into three sections. After the incipit (sung by the men), the work begins with a forceful organ introduction, soon joined by the exuberant voices of the choir. The B section visits the relative minor (F# minor) with bass, tenor, then soprano voices delivering a sublime melody. The previous musical material is heard at the text quoniam tu solus sanctus, this time with even greater energy and momentum, and the end features one of Vierne's harmonic staples, the 4-3-2-3 suspension in the tenor part.

Charles Villiers Stanford (1852-1924) was born in Dublin but spent most of his career in England. The two anthems represent the 20th century "English Renaissance," a period of rebirth of composition in Britain after 1900 after nearly two centuries of relative mediocrity. Ye choirs of new Jerusalem is a staple in the Anglican repertory. Set in a lilting 3/4 meter, the immediately recognizable theme is first announced in the soprano voices, a theme that acts as a ritornello throughout the piece. Text painting abounds in a variety of ways. Repeated text using sequential figures adds emphasis to "cries aloud." The highest notes of the melodic line are reserved for words such as victory, wake, and power. The contrasting B section visits the parallel minor to illustrate the text devouring depths of hell. A triumphant return of the A section gives way to the Lesser Doxology, first announced by the men's voices, and answered by the upper voices. The anthem When Mary thro' the garden went sets a text by Mary Coleridge (a descendent of Samuel Taylor Coleridge). The Mary of the title is Mary Magdalene, and the deceptively simple music perfectly evokes the still, rapt atmosphere of the first Easter morning.

Treble Grace Campbell to Perform this Sunday in Good Shepherd

Grace Campbell

This Sunday we welcome Grace Campbell as she presents a voice recital as the 4:15pm concert. A senior at Henry Clay High School, Grace Campbell moved to Lexington, Kentucky from San Antonio, Texas in 2006. She has been singing in church choirs since she was 4 years old and joined the Good Shepherd Episcopal Church choir in 2006. Since then she has toured with the church choir to places such as Rome, Paris New York, and Ely, England. In addition to singing with the church choir, she began taking voice lessons with Joanna McCarty-Rogers's Vocal Studio in 2011. This autumn she will attend the University of the South in Sewanee, Tennessee.

Her program for Sunday afternoon features sacred and secular works for solo voices, running the gamut from Bach & Handel to Spirituals to Broadway show tunes.

Upcoming Noteworthy Performances

Organ Recital by Roberta Gary in Louisville Sunday 4/27

The Journey of Holy Week
As we experience Holy Week, it is fitting to be reminded of the significance and solemnity of the Triduum.

What's the Triduum?
The number three is important in Christianity.  There are three persons that make up one Trinity (Father, Son, Holy Ghost).  Christ was raised from the dead after three days.  The Great Alleluia is sung three times at the Easter Vigil.

The Triduum services are actually all part of one thing, similar to the Trinity.  It starts with Maundy Thursday where we commemorate the institution of the Eucharist (Maundy is the English version of Mandatum [Commandment]: Love one another).  Exemplifying this commandment there is ceremonial foot-washing and we join together in the final Eucharist before Easter.  Following the Eucharist the altar is stripped bare and the reserve sacrament is removed so there is in effect no "life" left in the Sanctuary. This sets the stage for Good Friday, the most stark day of the liturgical year.

Good Friday is one of the two days the Episcopal Church prescribes as mandatory fast days (i.e., no eating, etc).  It's usually the only service of the year we sing where we do not wear surplices or any other ornaments.  The organ is silent and hymns & psalms are sung without accompaniment.  The Eucharist is not celebrated on Good Friday, but some years we do share in Communion using host that was consecrated the night before (the Mass of the Pre-Sanctified).  All come together to note and mourn Christ's death illustrated through the reading of the Passion.  The service ends just as it began, in silence.

The Great Easter Vigil, the third part of the Triduum, is the most important and most significant liturgical celebration of the entire year.  It should properly be observed just before dawn on Easter Day, but due to the impractical nature of getting the congregation to turn up at 6:00am, we (and most parishes on planet Earth) do it on Saturday night.  The service starts with the Kindling of the New Fire outside, from which the Paschal Candle is lit, which in turn lights candles held by the congregation.  All process into a dark church where a deacon, priest, or cantor (in that order of liturgical preference) sings the Exsultet, a glorious prayer that recounts the holiness of this night.  The vigil is kept as we hear lessons and Collects of God's great works (The Creation, Valley of Dry Bones, etc).  In great liturgical theatre, the lights are brought up, a fanfare is sounded, and the Gloria is sung for the first time in 40 days.  From there the service proceeds like a normal Sunday morning Eucharist, with the reading of the Epistle, the Great Alleluia (sung 3 times), and all other Eucharistic proceedings.  The "party" is then extended into Sunday morning's Eucharists in an atmosphere of great festivity.
