Notes for Sunday's Music

The anthem Like as the Hart was written by Herbert Howells in January 1941 after losing his home to the ravages of World War II in England. The longing of the Psalmist is set most expressively and the phrases are so carefully shaped that one can hardly think of those words set in any other way. The tenor and bass voices singing in unison convey a sense of longing and even sadness, which is answered and expanded upon by the soprano voices. It ends in the utmost serenity with one of those long drawn-out cadences, the organ providing a final punctuation. The profound melody accompanied by subtle blues harmonies affords the listener transcendence from time and space.

The Communion Hymn (458, My song is love unknown) is noteworthy for its descriptive, metaphysical, and emotional text. The phrase "love unknown" in the opening line is possibly in homage to George Herbert's allegorical poem by that title. When sung in its entirety, the effect of the text is stunning. Like Herbert and other metaphysical poets, Crossman has adapted to devotional purposes the hyperbolic tone and intensifying techniques formerly associated with Renaissance love poetry. The tune Love Unknown was composed for use with this text by John Ireland. A most sympathetic setting of the Crossman text, it reflects the composer's fine skills as a song writer.

Eastern Kentucky University Trumpet Studio to Perform this Sunday in Good Shepherd

Eastern Kentucky University Trumpet Studio

This Sunday we welcome students from the Trumpet Studio of Dr. Joseph Van Fleet at Eastern Kentucky University for the 4:15pm concert. Renaissance through 20th-century composers are represented on this program, which includes Vivaldi's Concerto for Two Trumpets (accompanied by our "Miller and Wrigley" Organ), and work by EKU professor Richard Byrd entitled "Sound Reflections."

Professor Joseph Van Fleet has been on the facility of Eastern Kentucky University since 2006. Prior to teaching at EKU, he had been the instructor of trumpet at Campbellsville University and associate instructor of trumpet at Indiana University. He holds degrees from Murray State University (BME) and Indiana University (MM and DMA).  He has studied with many influential teachers, including Bill Adam, Vince DiMartino, Arnold Jacobs, John Rommel, and John Schlabach.

In addition to teaching, Joseph maintains an active performing career. He currently holds the second trumpet position with both the Lexington Philharmonic Orchestra and the Richmond (Indiana) Philharmonic Orchestras. He also regularly performs with the Kentucky Baroque Trumpet Ensemble.

Weekly Service of Compline continues through Lent

During Lent Good Shepherd is offering the Office of Compline on Wednesday evenings at 9:00pm (3/12, 3/19, 3/26, 4/2, 4/9).

The English word Compline is derived from the Latin completorium, as Compline is the completion of the working day.

Music, silence, and contemplative prayer are the key features of this meditative service.

All are welcome to join in this weekly service during the season of Lent.
