Notes for Sunday's Music

The Anthem at 9:00 is a haunting setting of the text Improperium by contemporary composer McNeil Robinson (b. 1943). Scored for organ and two-part voices, the atmosphere is one of melancholy and sorrow. The text is the proper Offertory Verse for Palm Sunday, though this text is occasionally sung at other times throughout Lent. The accompaniment features the lush sounds of our "Miller and Wrigley Organ," most notably the shimmering strings in the Swell division and the 8' Harmonic Flute of the Great. An active liturgical and concert musician, Robinson is currently organist of Holy Trinity RC Church in New York City.

The Anthem at 11:15 is a charming setting of "Be thou my vision" by contemporary composer John Rutter (b. 1945). Rutter appropriately captures the Celtic nature of this tune in his setting, which assigns the melody alternately to unison upper parts, unison lower parts, and also features Rutter's signature fluid four-part writing. Rutter was previously Director of Music at Clare College, Cambridge. He now directs the Cambridge Singers, a group that primarily exists to make recordings, and divides his time between composing and conducting.

Clif Cason was born in Lexington, Kentucky and has served Maxwell Street Presbyterian as Director of Music and Organist for over twenty years. He has two degrees in organ performance, a Bachelor in Music from the University of Kentucky (1977) and a Master in Music from the University of Illinois (1979). His teachers have included Arnold Blackburn, Richard Dwyer, and Jerald Hamilton. Additional organ studies have been with Marie-Claire Alain at the Conservatoire National de Musique de Rueil-Malmison, France, where he was awarded the Premier Prix in 1980, and post-graduate studies with Larry Smith at Indiana University (1988-1989).

Weekly Service of Compline continues through Lent

During Lent Good Shepherd will be offering the Office of Compline on Wednesday evenings at 9:00pm (3/12, 3/19, 3/26, 4/2, 4/9).

The English word Compline is derived from the Latin completorium, as Compline is the completion of the working day.

Music, silence, and contemplative prayer are the key features of this meditative service.

All are welcome to join in this weekly service during the season of Lent.
