Notes for Sunday's Music

French composer Jean Langlais (1907-1991), by his life and testament, united two traditions in France in the twentieth century. As organist at St Clotilde in Paris for more than forty years, he strengthened the spiritual musical legacy established there by Csar Franck and continued by Charles Tournemire. As a blind man, he was his generation's foremost successor to the great blind virtuosos Louis Vierne and Andr Marchal. Organ Book (1956) was written as a gift for Marchal's daughter on the occasion of her marriage to composer Giuseppe Englert. Pastoral Song features the haunting registration of 8' Clarinet with 2 2/3' Nazard of the Choir division pitted against the warm 8' & 4' flutes of the Swell. Fltes, as the name implies, is a delightful movement that features the various flute stops of the organ. A profound sense of mysticism abounds in both movements, and the irregular meter of Fltes gives the impression of a certain improvised spontaneity. As a result of his many tours to the US, Langlais was familiar with American hymns, and 1985 American publisher Fred Bock encouraged Langlais to compose his American Folk-Hymn Settings. His setting How Firm a Foundation is played for the closing voluntary.

The Anthem is Gerre Hancock's (1934-2012) treatment of the spiritual Deep River. Affectionately known as "Uncle Gerre" by his choristers, Hancock was organist of St Thomas Fifth Avenue, New York, from 1971-2004, and previously held positions at St Bartholomew's, New York, and Christ Church Cathedral, Cincinnati. In his student days he studied in France with Marie-Claire Alain, Jean Langlais, and Nadia Boulanger. As a prolific composer, teacher, performer, and founding member of the Anglican Association of Musicians, he is a great legacy in the community of American Episcopal musicians.

Students from Central Music Academy to Perform this Sunday in Good Shepherd

Students from Central Music Academy

This Sunday for the 4:15pm Concert we welcome students from the Central Music Academy. The Central Music Academy is a non-profit organization that exists to provide quality music performance education for financially disadvantaged children in downtown Lexington, Kentucky. The Academy partners with the community and other arts organizations to reach every child regardless of experience or financial need, enabling them to develop artistically, intellectually, spiritually, and socially through musical study.

The Central Music Academy understands that the expense of a quality arts education is the main reason why many children miss this opportunity for development. Therefore, CMA provides free music programs to children who receive free/reduced lunches at school. We pride ourselves on embracing unique musical programs that promote cultural and ethnic awareness; our student population is also very diverse.

The Central Music Academy's overarching goals include building personal capacity, discipline, musical skills, and self-esteem within at-risk youth. We pursue these objectives through free music lessons taught by qualified instructors in all areas of musical performance: winds, percussion, voice, and strings. To date, CMA's dedicated teachers have served over 750 students in private lessons, group classes, and camps. www.centralmusicacademy.org

Weekly Service of Compline coming in Lent

During Lent Good Shepherd will be offering the Office of Compline on Wednesday evenings at 9:00pm (3/12, 3/19, 3/26, 4/2, 4/9).

The English word Compline is derived from the Latin completorium, as Compline is the completion of the working day.

Music, silence, and contemplative prayer are the key features of this meditative service.

All are welcome to join in this weekly service during the season of Lent.

Participants filled the quire stalls for our
Be A Chorister for an Evening event on Sunday.
A Wonderful Evening of Music

This past Sunday evening the choirs hosted a "Be A Chorister for an Evening" event in order to share their love of music and liturgy with others. Together hosts and guests numbers about 50 singers, and we enjoyed sharing in a meal, rehearsing together, singing in small groups, and closed the evening by singing together in the church.

Don't fret if you missed this evening and would still like to join one of our wonderful choirs. We have a spot for you!  Call or e-mail the choirmaster today to learn how your family can be involved.  859 252 1744; choirmaster@goodshepherdlex.org
