Notes for Sunday's Music

The opening voluntary is a chorale prelude by J.S. Bach (1685-1750) on the first hymn of the morning, Herr Jesu Christ, dich uns zu wend (Hymn 3), a hymn that has been in Episcopal hymnals since 1916. Bach's treatment of this chorale trio (BWV 655) features only three voices, with one voice given to the right hand, one to the left, and one to the feet. Fragments of the opening arpeggio motive from the hymn form the basis for the motivic material in all three parts. The pedal triad is heard more often than usual in a Bach setting, as if it were an appeal (Herr Jesu! - Lord Jesus!). After hearing numerous hints of the chorale melody, the tune (cantus firmus) is presented in its entirety in the bass, bringing this joyful chorale prelude to a close with a two-measure plagal cadence.

The Anthem, Teach me, O Lord, is one of Thomas Attwood's (1765-1838) most famous and most performed choral miniatures performed today. Hailing from London, Attwood was well traveled, and studied with Mozart in Vienna in the mid 1780s. Teach me, O Lord shows the influence of Mozart in its directness, economical use of harmony, and melodic contour accentuating the natural stresses of the text. Attwood was organist at St Paul's Cathedral in London, and later in life, became friends with Felix Mendelssohn.
