Next "Soulful Space" Concert in Good Shepherd this Saturday, 22 November 2014
The "Soulful Space" Concert Series in Good Shepherd continues with a concert by singer & guitarist Caroline Herring on Saturday, 22nd November at 7:00pm.

Join us Saturday, November 22 at 7:00 p.m. for a wonderful evening of American folk music.  With accolades and endorsements from critics and fellow musicians alike, Signature Sounds recording artist Caroline Herring has emerged as one of the most literate and distinctive songwriters of her generation and one of the freshest voices to hit the music scene in a long time. Since her debut in 2001, Herring has gained a devoted following and much critical acclaim. Named "Best New Artist" at the Austin Music Awards, Caroline has been profiled on NPR's "All Things Considered," been a guest on Garrison Keillor's "A Prairie Home Companion," and was the only American representative involved in the prestigious Cecil Sharp Project in England, a group of musicians commissioned to compose music based on the life and collections of the famous song catcher.

"Caroline's songs are always perfect little mysteries and powerful, hopeful love stories, but they are never simple thrilling romances. They are complex, modern, tradition-influenced compositions about love and hate and everything in between." --- Silas House

Organist Kevin Faulkner to Perform this Sunday in Good Shepherd
Kevin Faulkner

This Sunday we welcome organist Kevin Faulkner to play the 4:15pm concert.  Kevin Faulkner is the Director of Music at the Roman Catholic parish of St. James in Elizabethtown, Kentucky, having arrived in 2011. He is the principal organist and choirmaster and conducts the parish adult choir, and choirs of girls and boys. In addition to the parish duties, he also plays for school masses at the adjoining parish school.

Kevin has been a Roman Catholic director for some thirty years and has served parishes in Missouri, Georgia and Tennessee and Pennsylvania. He holds an undergraduate degree from Birmingham Southern College and a graduate degree in organ from Scarritt School where his teacher was Wilma Jensen. He has also studied with Ann Labounsky and played for Antoine Reboulet and Marie-Madeline Durufl. In addition, he is presently preparing a book on the Parisian organist and composer Charles Tournemire as there is no English biography. He has given recitals in the US and Canada and is preparing for an invitation to play in Paris at Ste. Clotilde where Tournemire was the parish organist and in Bordeaux. He has given a talk at the National Pastoral Musicians convention in 1998. In addition, he has given talks on Gregorian chant in the music of 20th century French composers, liturgical reform and liturgical theology. He also consults on liturgical matters through diocesan boards and through writing articles. The parish choir of St. James just presented a concert performance of Gabriel Faure's "Requiem" mass two weeks ago under Kevin's direction, a first for them.

He is married to Michele Pynaert from Halluin, France and has two children, Catherine and Matthew from a previous marriage. This recital represents a return to playing concerts after a hiatus of some 5 years.

Notes for Sunday's Music

At the 11:15am Eucharist the Choir offers up two movements of the Ordinary with a setting by contemporary English composer Grayston Ives (b. 1948) from his Missa Brevis (1987). Ives' choral music is characterized by fluid part writing while using fresh harmonies such as an abundance of major sevenths and other added chord tones. Ives grew up as a chorister at Ely Cathedral and from 1991-2009 was Informator Choristarum (Director of Music) at Magdalen College in Oxford.

The Anthem by Eleanor Daley is a setting of George Herbert's (an Anglican priest) glorious text, "King of Glory, King of Peace." The text was first published in 1633 and entitled "Praise." Though such verbal precision ("utmost art") may seem at odds with the homely image such as "the cream of all my heart," Herbert's achievement here is not consistency but comprehensiveness, resulting in an almost Romantic exuberance of feeling and a quite cerebral intensity of thought. A native of Ontario, Canada, Eleanor Daley (b. 1955) is director of music at Fairlawn Avenue United Church, Toronto, Ontario.

The Closing Voluntary, In dir ist Freude, comes from J.S. Bach's Orgelbchlein(Little Organ Book), which he started compiling around 1714. As Bach did with so many other forms, he elevated the short organ chorale to a level of excellence never previously achieved.

Sunday Afternoon Concert Program Notes

After the First World War, France lay in ruins. A large portion of men died as a result of the war and another large group of men had been wounded significantly (les mutils). French culture was at a crossroads and many of the leading figures, both artistic and intellectual, were struggling to find a new direction. In his monumental book "Jazz Age Catholicism", Stephen Schloesser notes that out of the ruins of World War I, there was born a renaissance of the French Catholic Church. This is especially fascinating given that just 20 years earlier, the State essentially banished the Church and Catholic clergy and monks were exiled out of the country. This "renouveau catholique" (Catholic renewal) had a direct effect on the church's liturgy and music. Gregorian chant, long a tradition in France and developed by the monks of Solesmes, found a new energy and became the source for composition and improvisation by many French organists. Today's program reflects three composers who found their voice in the "Catholic renaissance." All three used Gregorian chant as a source for composition and in the case of Charles Tournemire, used the simple lines of chant to create a monumental opus to this time period and a guide for future Catholic organists for liturgical organ playing

Trois Pomes vangliques d'aprs les textes sacrs

Jean Langlais (1907-1991)

(Three Evangelical Poems after sacred texts)

These three pieces constitute a collection based on Gospel texts. They are also vignettes of the scenes named in the title of the piece. Early in Langlais' output, they are picturesque and decidedly accessible pieces. Below each title is the vignettes described in the music.

L'Annonciation (The Annunciation)

Langlais describes the events in the Gospel of Luke as the angel visits the Blessed Virgin.

1) The Angel, 2) The Virgin, 3) The Heart of the Virgin, 4) The Virgin sings the Magnificat

La Nativit (The Nativity)

1) The Crche, 2) The Angels, 3) The Shepherds, 4) The Holy Family

Les Rameaux (The Palms)

The Entry of Jesus into Jerusalem

(Included in this piece in the pedal is the Gregorian hymn "Hosanna Filio David (Hosanna to the Son of David.)

Prlude et Fugue sur le nom d'Alain

Maurice Durufl (1902-1986)

Prelude and Fugue on the name of Alain

Durufl's friend and composer Jehan Alain was killed in the Second War in 1940. This piece is a "hommage" to his memory and was composed in 1942. Two themes emerge in the prelude. One is the spelling of Alain's name (the notes A D A A F) and the other is a quotation of Alain's organ work "Litanies." The prelude is an exquisite arabesque and contains a wonderfully structured sense of direction.

The fugue is a double fugue and uses as its first subject the theme of Alain's name. The first theme is then juxtaposed against a running figure that combines to make a thrilling and poignant ending, full of emotion and grandeur. This piece is one of the most played in Durufl's output and is considered to be one of the finer organ works of the 20th century.

L'Orgue Mystique (The Mystical Organ)

Charles Tournemire (1870-1939)

Office no. 51 for the 23rd Sunday after Pentecost

5. Fantaisie sur le "Te Deum" et Guirlandes Alleluiatiques

(Fantasy on the hymn 'Te Deum Laudamus' and Alleluias)

Charles Tournemire, the enigmatic composer and organist wrote between 1927 and 1932 the magnificent set of pieces entitled "The Mystical Organ." Grouped into 51 suites for the Sundays of the year, the 255 pieces are based on the proper Gregorian chants for the Sunday. This piece, the last piece in the last Sunday of the Church year, is based on the Gregorian hymn "Te Deum Laudamus" which translated means "We praise you O God." It is a commentary on two matters. First, it is a celebration of the end of the Church year and second, a commentary that Tournemire wrote for himself as a celebration of the finishing of his magnum opus.

The recitalist today has a special affinity for Tournemire as he is presently working on an English biography of the composer. Also, please note that Tournemire taught both Langlais and Durufl and that Langlais was the successor to Tournemire as the organist at the Basilica of Ste. Clotilde in Paris.
