Annual All Saints' Concert This Sunday
Notes for Sunday's Music

T. Tertius Noble (1867-1953), a native of Bath, England, was Organist & Master of the Choristers at St Thomas Fifth Avenue in Manhattan from 1913-1943 where he is credited for establishing a choir program along the lines of the great English cathedrals. Prior to this appointment, he served Ely Cathedral and York Minster in England. Souls of the Righteous treats this comforting text from the Book of Wisdom in an unencumbered homophic manner utilizing the warm key of G-flat major.

Richard Proulx is an eminent figure in the world of church music who joined with the saints in eternal life just a few years ago in 2010. His Variations on Sine Nomine treat the familiar tune (Hymn 287) as a trio (three voice texture), a canon (one voice following the other in strict imitation), a gigue (a jaunty dance in 6/8 meter), a chorale (the melody appearing in the top voice in long notes while supporting voices provide lush harmonies), and a fugato (a more complicated version of a canon). A native of Minnesota, Richard Proulx (which rhymes with "new") had a fruitful career in church music all over the US, and most notable is his tenure as organist at Holy Name Roman Catholic Cathedral in Chicago. He also served on advisory boards for new church hymnals, including our Hymnal 1982. At Good Shepherd we regularly sing one of his Sanctus settings, S125 in the Hymnal.
