Notes for Sunday's Music

Alexandre Guilmant, active 100 years after Bach's death, was influenced by Bach through studying with Jacques Lemmens in Brussels. Lemmens studied with Hesse, who studied with Bach himself. During the 19th and early 20th multi-movement organ compositions gained great popularity. The second and third movements of Sonata No. 3 are played for the Voluntaries. While Guilmant called these works "sonata," his contemporary Charles-Marie Widor called them "symphony." From 1871-1901 Guilmant was organist at the Church of La Trinit in Paris, and in 1896 succeeded Widor as professor of organ at the Paris Conservatory.

The Anthem Sweeter Far than Honey by Samuel Hunter (b. 1988) is a fresh treatment of Psalm 19. Throughout the work the organ part provides color and an added depth to the text offered by the voices. Many phrases commence with the interval of an ascending fifth producing a haunting effect. The anthem was commissioned in 2011 by the Association of Anglican Musicians for use at their Annual Conference in Greenville, SC. Samuel Hunter is a native of Asheville, NC, and at a young age is already enjoying international success as a choral composer.
Choir Tour to Louisville on Saturday 10/18 and other news...
St Luke's Anchorage,
Choir Tour Destination 10/18

Last spring the choir had to cancel their trip to Louisville to sing evensong in St Luke's Anchorage as a result of threatening weather.

This trip has now been rescheduled for Saturday, October 18th.

St Luke's has appointed a new rector who is familiar to people who have been around Good Shepherd for any length of time.  Fr Michael Delk was curate at Good Shepherd in the late 90s, and is now the newly appointed rector of St Luke's Anchorage.  We're looking forward to being with Fr Delk and the entire St Luke's community on October 18th.  If you'd like to tag along with the choir on this trip October 18th, please be in touch with me (contact info below), and we'll be pleased to reserve you a place.  The cost is $25 per seat for adults and $10 for kids aged 12 and under.
