Notes for Sunday's Music

The music of Sigfrid Karg-Elert (1877-1933) is becoming increasingly well known, though he's not yet a standard household name in this country. If an organ composer wants to be recognized in Germany, he writes music based on chorales (i.e., German hymns). Such was the case of Karg-Elert when he composed his 66 Chorale Variations, Op. 65, of which two are played for the voluntaries this morning. He was influenced by the music of Bach (no surprise there; every composer is influenced by Bach!), Claude Debussy, and Max Reger. Both Schmcke dich, o liebe Seele and Nun danket alle Gott represent these influences. Schmcke dich (based on Hymn 339) is a luscious, chromatic treatment of this Eucharistic tune. Nun danket (Marche Triomphale) is perhaps his most famous composition for organ. Fragments of the tune (Hymn 397) are heard in the soprano voice, but in a disguised manner. Flourishes and chromaticism abounds, though within the strict parameters of tonality, hallmark traits for this romantic / impressionistic / expressionistic composer.

The Anthem View me, Lord by Richard Lloyd is a simple setting of text by Thomas Campion. Set in F Major, this miniature work follows all the graceful traits of SATB part writing with frequent contrary motion between the soprano and bass voices, leaps rarely greater than a fourth, and giving melodic contour even to the alto and tenor parts. Now retired and living in Herefordshire, Richard Lloyd held positions at Hereford and Durham Cathedrals.

Lisa Lewis

Organist Lisa Lewis to Perform this Sunday in Good Shepherd

This Sunday we welcome Lisa Lewis to play the 4:15pm concert.  Lisa Lewis, a native of Louisville, Kentucky and a tenth generation Kentuckian, has served as Organist/Choirmaster at St. Luke's Episcopal Church since May 1984.  Ms. Lewis studied with Melvin Dickinson at the University of Louisville, earning both Bachelor's and Master's degrees in Organ Performance.  Summer study in Germany with Harald Vogel (1978) gave the opportunity to practice and perform on historic instruments in Scharmbeck, Stade, Cappel and Eenum creating an intense interest in early music performance practices.  Similar study in France (1988) resulted in recitals on the historic Clicquot organ in Souvigny and the Cavaille Coll organ in Castelnaudery.  The dream of a fine mechanical action organ for St. Luke's was born out of those experiences.  While the Martin Pasi organ was being built in the shop in Roy, Washington, Ms. Lewis studied with Dr. Roberta Gary, Professor of Organ at the University of Cincinnati Conservatory of Music.

Recent recitals include the dedication recital of the Martin Pasi, Opus 22 organ at St. Luke's in June, 2013, a harpsichord recital at Christ Church Cathedral and monthly participation in the Bach Lectures Series.  Ms. Lewis is Artistic Director of St. Luke's Organ Recital Series.

Annual All Saints' Concert Friday, November 1st

Plan now to join us Friday evening November 1st at 7:00pm for our Annual All Saints' Concert.  Featured on this program is Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's monumental Requiem, K 626, sung by the combined Good Shepherd Choirs and accompanied by Dr. Schuyler Robinson.  The program will also include other seasonal music commemorating our Communion with the Saints.  Suggested donation: $15

The version of the Requiem to be sung at this concert is the latest revision by Robert D. Levin, Harvard musicologist, published in 2004. Most notable in this edition are the newly finished sections, particularly the Amen fugue following the Lacrimosa. A sketch of the subject was discovered after Mozart's death, and Robert Levin finished it according to strict contrapuntal procedure. It is clear in the "original" Sssmayr completion that apparent flaws abounded, and Levin essentially cleaned up much of Sssmayr's work. Those in the audience who are keenly familiar with the older revisions of this work will pick up on numerous changes in voice leading.

Please join us on this memorable evening as we pay tribute to all the saints who have gone before us through this extraordinary musical offering.
